WALKING-STICK--4...

On hearing the shouts from Maadasamy..the railway gate keeper who was busy in opening the level–crossing gate at the opposite side rushed to help Maadasamy..but Sankaralingam died even before he could be taken to Hospital.. The pitiable thing was being Sunday….there were no movement of people or carts in that road.. it was like a dirt road in a desert..and only the gate keeper could assist Maadasamy to take his brother to Hospital..

Police registered the case and PANDY the adjusant land owner to Sankaralingam’s land Arrested and a murder case foisted on the basis of EYE WITNESS of Maadasamy.. Police recovered the blood–stained Aruvaa of Maadasamy from the crime spot and thorough search in the surrounding bushes as well as the single foot-track traversing from the side of the crime site to the parallel dirt road.. did not yield any clues..Autopsy report of Sankaralingam indicated ..death caused by the cut in the neck and throat probably by a shorp wepon like Aruvaa or similar thing.. Search by the police in Pandy’s small thatched house did yield an Aruvaa.. but it was in completely rusted condition and would not have been used for long.. Pandy did not have any major property in the house except an all sides opened bullock cart, two bulocks, a bicycle and some household articles..

Pandy’s aged Mother called on my GrandFather and pleaded to take-up his case..GrandFather was not sure of the outcome of the case but took-out Pandy on bail..He insisted Pandy to tell the truth so that he could handle the case properly..and then Pandy’s version of the story unfolded..

Pandy.. his Mother and his only sister were having a small thatched house and a small piece of land adjusant to Sankaralingam’s land and no other worthy property…After Pandy’s father passed away couple years back…he took over the cultivation and with the meager income from the land they were sustaining their life..About an year back Sangralingam approached Pandy with two proposals…..one was for the marriage of Pandy’s Sister to Maadasamy and the other one was to sell Pandy’s land to Sangaralingam.. Neither Pandy’s Mother nor Pandy himself inclined to oblige Sangralingam and told in no uncertain manner not to approach them with such proposals for ever..

Then the problems started for Pandy’s family.. First a part of crop ..waiting for harvesting destroyed by un-known in Pandy’s Land and Pandy cornered Sangralingam as he suspected his involvement but Sangralingam flatly denied any knowledge about it.. Then about two months after ..his thatched roofed house was set on fire one day in the dead of the night….and Pandy, his Sister..Mother all escaped by ‘the skin of their teeth’ ..Pandy lodged a police complaint…and so for no head-way was made…As Pandy was very well aware…’that’ must be the handi-work of Sangralingam…he gathered some of his relatives and went to his house…The wordly dual resulted in the group clash among Pandy, his relatives and Sankaralingam with his hench-men and there were blood-shed on both sides..Maadasamy ..who rushed in to support Sankaralingam was severly beaten –up.. Eventhough police have taken into custody all the personnel…they could not file any charge-sheet as both the parties preferred Not to make any complaint against each other…That much of faith they had with the police force on those days..!!.. A week after this Pandy was way-laid by some goons and beaten-up while returning from his field…Pandy’s Mother restrainted him from retaliation as it will further aggravate the already escalating conflict…

So you had a motive to take revenge and killed Sangralingam..was it not..?..asked my Grand Father….

No…No..’Sami’ [ Sami is a tamil word equalent to ‘Sir’ in English and generally used to address an elderly Brahmin..]..I was NOT AT ALL all at the crime site but ‘framed’ into this by Maadasamy ..said Pandy…
