There are no specific rules for reciting Sri Vishnu Sahasranama Stotram. The rules are same as those of any Hindu worship: clean mind (antha: soucham), clean body, clean place and clean clothes (baahya soucham). Depending on the circumstances (desha- kaala - deha dharma), one could forego the external cleanliness. Very simple !!
There are some rules for Puja, especially for Archana which has a procedure laid-down. There is a reason why cleanliness is advised. Being clean around is believed to help in focusing on the task at hand (Puja in this case), not as a superficial requirement to look good.
We can discuss later, on the effect of reciting any Mantra/ Sloka when you start reciting this Great Sri Vishnu Saharanamam every day!
Sankara TV had a very good learning series; I think it is the best learning series available online. I would add that learning from CD with the audio slowed down using software is not recomended unless you have learnt it traditionally as a child and just want to brush up. You can watch the series here (fwd to 11:40). (I currently can't post links so search for "[h=1]Learn Vishnu Sahasranamam - Gurukulam - Sankara TV " in youtube[/h]
Please note that the actual teaching as per Gurukula method (which includes extra care on difficult portions) starts from 11:40 in the first video. The Poorva Bhaga portion has already been taught in this series.
