I have heard also about "vEl muRai" and "mayil muRai" and I think the muRai and maRai may be the same.

Both are different. Vel maaral is a poetic prayer scribed by vallimalai sri sachchidananda swamigal. I fyou go throuh the entire poeme you will find the same lines repeating. If you want to listen to the rhythmic prayer you may download the audio by sirgazhi sivachidambaram and listen to the same.
