Vaikathashtami Festival –Dedicated to Lord Shiva and Parvati
The Vaikathashtami Festival is one of the sacred festivals celebrated in Kerala. This festival takes place during the dark lunar of the Malyalam month on the Ashtami day. The festival is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Parvati in the form of Shivalinga in the month of November or December every year at Vaikom Mahadeva temple. At this temple various procession are been carried out to worship deities and to receive blessing from them.
About Vaikom Mahadeva temple
Vaikom Mahadeva temple is one of the scared and oldest temples in Kerala dedicated to Lord Shiva and Parvati. It is believed to be one of the powerful temples in Kerala along with Ettumanoor Siva Temple and Kaduthuruthy Thaliyil Mahadeva Temple. It is believed that if you visit these three temples your wishes will be fulfilled. The Shiva linga of Vaikom Mahadeva temple is regarded as the one of the oldest where pooja and other rituals are continuously worshipping on important days without any breaks. The name of the temple was given in the loving memory and respect of Vaikom’s Shiva. The temple has ancient wooden framework. The main highlight of the temple is Nandi which is seen in the front of sanctum. The inner wall resembles the ancient architecture.

During these festivals, huge flock of people visit to worship Lord Shiva and Parvati to fulfil their wishes. It was believed that Lord Shiva and Parvati have given darshan to Sage Vyakradapa and hence it is the major event. Another highlight of this festival is that Lord Murga use to meet his father Lord Shiva for small meetings at this temple. This annual meetings attracted many devotees to visit this temple as blessing from them.
Celebrations during Vaikathashtami Festival
The Vaikasthastami festival is celebrated with thousands of devotees visit this temple every year. On the Asthami night the Symbolic idol of Thidampu (Lord Shiva’s idol) is taken out from the original place for procession. Thidampu is also called as the Vaikom Mahadeva. Rituals are been carried out including LIngabhishekam which is very important moment for devotes to take blessings from the Lord Shiva. On this auspicious event, many cultural performances and fairs are been arranged to entertain visitors. The dance performances and classical music including Kathakali dances are worth to witness during this event.
