Thiruppugazh in the style of Thiruppavai

The Thiruppavai song sung by MLV and the raagas she has chosen made Thiruppavai a devine music and such a excellent match of verse and raaga is missing in Thiruppugazh. Why some famous frontline carnatic music artists take this task? Thiruppagaz has eternal appeal and the time has come to propagate it through appealing raagas like thiruppavai. Can anybody list the most appealing raagas sung by singers of yesteryears so far thiruppugaz is concerned?

Thiruppavai was sung by a poetess and and the stanzas are based on beautiful rhymes.

Thiruppugazh gives more importance to the rhythms! Some of the songs are tongue-twisting, breath-taking thala-based adventures.

It will be much tougher to render them as sweetly as the thiruppavai - especially by lady singers.

I would suggest the name of Sri. Vijay Siva for the rendition of the thiruppugazh to popularize it.

He has the right voice, the captivating pitch among male singers, his perfect pronunciation of Tamil words with Bhaavam and has an excellent thaalaa concept.

I went into rapture listening to his rendition of the Kandhar Anuboothi in a series of owdava raagaas (with just 5 swaraas in the aarohanam as well as avarohanam) in a lighting speed. :dizzy:

May be we all should join together and request him to do this.

Thiruppaavai and Thiruppukazh are of entirely different genres. While the former is full of Bhakti rasam and is a part of the Vaishnavite corpus of sacred scriptures, the latter was considered as one of the folk variety. In fact most of the Thiruppukazh palm leaves were with Non-Brahmins and since Carnatic Music was mainly in the domain of Brahmins, in the olden days, Thiruppukazh did not at all form a part of accepted Carnatic music.

In the 20th. century some of the Nadaswaram Vidwans (who were mostly from NB castes) made a small beginning to popularize Thiruppukazh in their renderings and other Vidwans took the cue from this. Whereas each Thiruppaavai is sufficiently long to bring out the aesthetics and nuances of a raga, thiruppukazhs are not so. We must also remember that Ariyakkudi Ramanuja Iyengar set the tune (raga) for thiruppavai on the suggestion by Kanchi Maha Periyaval and this scheme is now universally followed as prescribed ragas, sort of. In the case of Thiruppukazh the difficulty is in singing the lines to the accepted ThaaLas of CM.

Now, A.S. Raghavan's scheme is being religiously followed by the various Thiruppukazh anbarkaL groups and there is 'dog-eat-dog' competition among these groups to catch disciples and increase incomes!! But it is difficult to render a complete Thiruppukazh katcheri for two hours because it will turn out to be like Bhajan, and not a musical performance.

There is an organization called Thiruppugazh Anbargal in say Bangalore. You might have heard of Thiruppugazh Raghavan referred to fondly as Guruji who was once a New Delhi based Bank Officer who having been a good exponent Carnatic Music had set about 500 Thiruppugazh songs to different Raagas and Taalas. He not only conducted Thiruppugazh Bhajans, but also trained several people in Thiruppugazh and formalized the musical worship of Lord Murugan. You could contact a branch of this organization in the city of your residence and learn to sing if you are musically inclined. It would be better to do this rather than merely listen to.

Should you only be interested in downloading the text of the lyrics or listen to how Guruji has sung the same there are MP3 recordings of the songs. It is a treat to be attending Thiruppugazh bhajan performance. They have brought out a standard text in Tamizh script too.
