Think or sink!

We lose whatever we don't use!
Also we can't use what we don't have!
So the message is loud and clear!

If you have something and want to retain it, use it!
It may be an art / a craft / a sport / a talent / a skill.
But the only way to retain that is to put it to constant use.

I have seen women who never leave a chair or a couch
or a sofa, fearing the pain in the legs when they try to walk.
To avoid the pain they avoid waking completely.

Maybe they can retire completely without disturbing anyone's schedule or without making anyone else miss their services and suffer. But eventually they will need to be transported on wheel chairs even inside the house.

One lady used to manage to lie down in a 3' long seat all day long, by curling up her legs . Eventually she could not stretch her legs to the full extent. Can she ever again walk? May not be!

So keep doing what all you can do, as well as you can do them, to keep yourself useful and in demand for your talents and time.

Nothing like feeling useful to someone and feeling loved by someone, to make life worth living! :)

A proverb a day to brighten the day!

123a. Stehend Wasser wird stinkend.
123b. Stagnant water will begin to stink.

A river keeps flowing and its water is safe to be used.
A body of stagnant water soon starts to stink,
since many organisms start breeding in it.

The same is true with the mental ability of a person.
Something new ( a word / a sentence / an info ) must be added
to it on daily basis - to keep it fresh and ready for use.

footnotes:-
Stehend = stagnant
Wasser = water
wird = will
stinkend = begin to stink

Elastic rope has its elastic limit.

When stretched beyond its limiting value,
it would snap and hit us back very hard.

The same is true of anything stretched beyond its safe limits....
be it Luck, Power, Authority, Oppression or Suppression.

Nature knows when and how to check this extreme step.

I have wondered seeing celebrity women with busts resembling rolling balls - reminding me of an old movie song in Tamil, by Kavignar KaNNadAsan. I have wondered how they always 'those twins' at two different levels - so to say, one upstairs and one downstairs?!

I have wondered what gives these supposed-to-be-identical-twins so much freedom of movement.
I found out the underlying reason very recently.

Being the truly liberated women, they have either burned down or thrown away their bra.
What do they do instead?

They stick on something resembling a rabbit's face to support that enormous mass!
So it is silicone inside them, silicone outside them and silicone is seen everywhere.
But the silicone gives up, or gives in, or droops down under the weight - making weird spectacles!

A woman on Oscar red carpet made me find this out -
since the descent of one was too glaring to be overlooked or ignored -
more so since the woman was exposing her precious things at two different levels!

Is modern Fashion a Fad, a Mod, or just stark Mad?

A proverb a day to brighten the day!

124a. Taten statt Worte.
124b. Actions in stead of words!

Knowing it is different from Doing it.
Saying it is different from Doing it.

One may know something and
say something but never do it!

Actions speak louder than words.
An ounce of action = One tone of advice!

Words are precious like Time and money
They should never be wasted!

So we should talk less and do more!
Also less we talk, less the number of controversies!

Footnotes:-
Taten = actions
statt = in stead of
Worte = words

In A.P. Where we used to live before retirement, we got to watch movies throughout the night on Siva rAthri. All the movies would be on Hindu Gods and almost the entire colon would be present the huge open air gallery to watch those movies.

Next day we could meet red eyed people going around and doing their daily chores, as usual.
The women folk are very staunch in their vrathams and would worship Brahmins as if they were Gods and Devathas in human form, born on the earth!

A proverb a day to brighten the day!

125a. Teile und herrsche.
125b. Divide and rule.

There is strength in Unity.
United we stand and divided we fall!

There is safely in numbers.
Larger groups are stronger and will survive.

The most popular policy of several selfish rulers is to
sow seeds of
differences, dissent and dissatisfaction
among the citizens, to make them weak and confused!
They live and survive by fishing in that muddy water.

Footnotes:-
Teile = divide
und = and
herrsche = rule

8. Safety in numbers?

Each autumn thousands of lobsters migrate from the reefs to the deep water, near Bahamas.
They form marching columns up to fifty strong – while crossing the open areas.

Each lobster hooks one pair of its front legs around the tail of the animal in front.
Thus the vulnerable belly and tail of each lobster are protected by the armored legs
and antennae of the one behind.

Unity is strength and there is safety in numbers!

Coimbatore is famous for its T junctions - where three roads meet!
Ukkadam bus stop has a U turn in adition to a T junction.

People on foot are lucky to come out in one piece - while crossing those broad roads.
One fine day I saw a human chain crossing that busy road with neither fear nor hurry.

It consisted of very old men and women with one eye bandaged - since they were coming from an eye camp. The killer traffic on either side came to a complete halt - until every blindfolded member of that human chain had crossed the road safely.

There is strength in Unity and safety in numbers!

A proverb a day to brighten the day!

126. Tut nach meinen Worten und nicht mach meinen werken.
126b. Act according my words and not according to my deeds.

There is a popular saying in Tamil.
"One must do a Sree Rama did!
One must do as Sree Krishna said!

There are two categories in everything.
Here those are 'The Doer' and 'The talker'!

We must imitate good actions and follow good
advises!
That way we get the best from The Doer and The Talker.

Footnotes:-
Tut = do/ act/ perform
nach = according to
meinen = my
Worten = words
und = and
nicht = don't
mach = do
meinen = my
werken = actions/ deeds

Ant is the living example of hard work,
foresight and living in a large community.

YET it never utters a word or makes a sound!

One must follow the Ant's actions -
without waiting for the Ant's sermons!

A proverb a day to brighten the day!

127a. Liebe ist blind
127b. Love is blind.

It is NOT just Love which is blind!
All strong emotions make a man blind.

Rage, Greed, Lust and Hatred also make a man blind
to the dire consequences of the actions he wants to take.

No need for foot notes to this word for word translation.

East VS West?

One famous doctor in my family was talking about the difference in the expectations of two patients with the same complaint - one living in the East and the other living in the West.

The patient in the East will be willing to adjust his daily activities, to suit the conditions of his health.
The patient in the West will be willing to get his body repaired, so as to pursue of his daily activities.

The human body is a rare instrument.

Over use it / or abuse it ... it gets ruined!
Do not use it at all... it will still get ruined!

The wise realize that the body is a temple of God.
They maintain it clean, pure and worthy of God.

The otherwise make their body a temple worthy of Satan.
The creases in the face show what kind of life one has lived.

Small wonder people want to erase all these creases
by lifting everything from eye lashes to you-know-what!

A proverb a day to brighten the day!

128a. Unter den Blinden ist der Einäugige König
128a. Among the blind, the one-eyed is the king.

No one is perfect or can ever be perfect.

So the person who lacks the talents less than the others do,
will be entrusted with the power to rule over the rest of them !

Does it explain why......
we always get the government we really deserve
and not the one we imagine we really deserve!

footnotes:-
Unter = among
den Blinden = the blind
der = the
Einäugige = one-eyed
ist = is
König = king

A proverb a day to brighten the day!

129a. Verbogener Schatz ist nicht wert.
129b. Hidden treasure is worth nothing.

Money is for pending.
Money and Muck must
spread evenly to become useful.
A treasure which no one knows about, or no can use, is worth nothing.

Footnotes:-
Verbogener = hidden/ secret
Schatz = treasure
ist = is
wert = worth
nicht = nothing

How would you like to feel as if in a boat
while standing on Terra firma ???

The imaginary buoyancy makes
your foot steps feel so unsure!

It may all be in the head or just
from the head for many reasons!

I have heard very old people saying,

"Why does a new day dawn?

"Why I can't I just go on sleeping?"

"I wish the night never ends!"

Now I understand what must have prompted those old and
worn out people to utter such words and weird desires!

A proverb a day to brighten the day!

130a. Verbotene Frucht schmeckt am besten.
130b. Forbidden fruit tastes the besten.

Often times the only way to make people do something is to forbid it! :oops:
There is a tiny terrorist
revolutionary hiding in every human being. ;)
Forbid anything and immediately they must try it out, to find out why it is forbidden!
:unsure:

Footnotes:-
Verbotene = forbidden
Frucht = fruit
schmeckt = tastes
am besten = the best

I know of little girls and boys who take pride in saying that
No one can make them to do anything -
unless they themselves wish to do it.

A very good policy as long as they make it a point
NOT to do anything - that they are not expected to do!

Today's link to two of my blogs ( overdue by two days! )

A proverb a day to brighten the day!

131a. Verstand kommt mit den Jahren [ German proverb]
131b. Wisdom comes with years / (age) [
English version]

Bitter and sour berries become sweet with advancing age.
Man is supposed to mellow with age, become wiser and more detached.
Yet how many men actually manage to do one or more of these is debatable.
Old books, old wine & old friends are supposed to be some of the best one can have.

Footnotes:-
Verstand = wisdom
kommt = comes
mit = with
den Jahren = the years

Telugu spoken in Coimbatore is very funny.

Most of it would be Tamil with few Telugu words thrown in as a seasoning!
When I spoke The Andhra Telugu for the first time, the ladies became surprised.

They wondered aloud how someone whose mother tongue is not Telugu
can speak pure Telugu and that too with the correct grammar.

My policy is "Whatever is worth doing, is worth doing well"

So yesterday I was typing the word longer as langer
and the P.C won't let it remain so!

It took me a few seconds to realize that I was typing the
German word 'langer' in place of the English word 'longer!"

They both mean exactly the same but differ in their spellings! :giggle:

Nowadays I watch Fairy Tales in German before going to bed.
1. They relax me after a busy day.
2. Always good things happen and " the people live 'happily ever after!"
3. The dialogues are simple and straightforward - without flourishes and fancy words!
4. Each story conveys a moral / a message/ a hope/ a promise.

The result???
I dream in German about the Good Fairies and the naughty ones - as in this story!
I am giving the link to the English Version here. Enjoy it over the Leap year weekend!

Morals I learnt from this story???
A Man does not know what he wants.
A Man does not cherish what he has!
A Man needs only others to make him happy!

The most dangerous malady of the modern life is Loneliness.
Man is not an isolated island because Man is a social animal.

When man does not trust anyone or let anyone enter into his life,
and when man will not reach out for help when he need it most,
Man has managed to fill up the Earth with millions of 'lonely people' -
despite the improved communication and transportation.

Physical health
Chronic loneliness can be a serious, life-threatening health condition. It has been found to be associated with an increased risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease. ... Prolonged, high cortisol levels can cause anxiety, depression, digestive problems, heart disease, sleep problems, and weight gain.

A proverb a day to brighten the day!

132a. Vertrauen erweckt Vertrauen.
132b. Trust gives rise to Trust.

It is common knowledge that people who do not trust
anyone else are themselves not trustworthy.

Such a person doubt everything and everyone and qualifies
to be called as ' A perpetual-doubting-Thomas.'

In the same city Yudhishtra could not find one bad person
and Dhuryodhana could not find one good person!

Everyone imagines everyone else to be exactly like himself!
Words and actions are interpreted - not as what they really are -
but in the manner the other person wishes to interpret them!
This may be the underlying reason for many misunderstandings!

Footnotes:-
Vertrauen = Trust
erweckt = awakens
Vertrauen = trust
