People always cherish their petty differences until threatened by a common

enemy and then they forget their differences and unite. :flock:

May be we should get a common enemy powerful enough to make us forget

our petty differences and come under one banner.

A three minutes long Condensed version of the
three + hours long Total Solar eclipse

  • BusinessGeekWire
Did you miss totality? Relive the solar eclipse’s climax in this 3-minute video

MADRAS, Ore. - Some skywatchers spend thousands of dollars on telescopes, cameras and other hardware to document a solar eclipse. John E. Hoots did it with a Sony Handycam video camera. Hoots, a semi-retired corporate scientist from Batavia, Ill., was part of our merry band in Madras, watching totality unfold today with thousands of others during Oregon Solarfest. Totality Awesome: Epic photos of the solar eclipse from an Idaho mountaintop He attached the video camera to a tripod, secured a pair of eclipse glasses in front of the lens, and manually tracked the sun as more and more of its disk… Read More

My dear Raji,
I did not stir out of my seat to view the Eclipse. It is far too time consuming - according to me!

I thought it was better to work of Rudra Sahsara nAma - with a lamp that remained lit throughout the day!

Nothing like prayer and mediation to ward of all the evil effects of the Grahas and GrahaNas!!!

Athimber (A2) went out to lo at the Sun in regular intervals.

He had difficulty in walking since he wore the protective Sunglasses even before he left the house.

The Eclipse viewing specs must have been of an excellent quality to make the bright day look pitch dark - since the Eclipse here was < 50% at its maximum! :)

Solar eclipse gives NASA a rare opportunity to study Mercury

While you're stuck on Earth during today's solar eclipse, NASA jets will be performing a tricky science experiment on the Sun and its closest companion, Mercury.

Mercury is closest to the Sun ...always lit up by its brilliant Sunshine.
Small wonder the NASA used the period of total eclipse to study Mercury.
In the darkness Mercury would have revealed many of its marvels!

Dear Sis,

We are so different!! ;)

I spent a bit more than three hours in our 'mottai mAdi', relaxing on an easy chair, to capture the

photos of the Moon, on a total lunar eclipse night. Picasa helped me to make a slide show, with music!
Here it is - enjoy viewing! :ranger:

My dear Raji,
Actually WE are not different. Only the line in which we are creative differs!

Thinking aloud about my real life real problem! Hope I am not boring you! If so hop over this post to the next please!

We had a couple in our company quarters whom everybody loved and respected. Now the uncle in late 80s (?) and aunt in her late 70s (?).

They are still lively, friendly and remain devoted to God. Uncle had a terrible fall in the bathroom and hurt his spine badly.

The nature of the problem and his advanced age made it impossible to give him any drastic treatment.

So his Doctors left him to the mercy of God! But the God in whom he has infinite faith did not fail him.

In less than four months he had made miraculous recovery with nothing but Raama naama japam and his unshakable faith in Raama naamam.

If a man so well advanced in his age could recover miraculously his mobility and ability to walk... why NOT I who is ~ 20 years younger to him???

I still have my limbs under my control. I still have unshakable faith in God. If He could do it I could do it too.
So NO more wavering about opting for the knee replacement surgery.:decision:

I will get back to normal health and strength with my own will power and infinite mercy of Raam.

As my doctor father always used to say,"Any day the god-given-original- knee is better than the man-made-metal-knee!" :hail:

If I am able to manage for the past 34 long years...So can I for the rest of my life!

P. S:

I was able to do my simple routine of Yoga ( mostly stretching and bending) since I was unable to get up from the floor after the routine. :(

I felt awful without the daily dose of stretching for my flexibility. After our flexibility determines how well and useful we feel .. not our weight/ height/ girth!

Now I have gone back to my simple routine .... can you guess how???

I do it on my cot with a hard bed so the problem of getting up from the floor has been side stepped.

So I get up one hour earlier in the morning but I feel so good throughout the day- despite the daily deficit in my sleep!

Real Life Mathematics!

Humanity and Humility.

Infinity is undefined just as zero is, but the similarity ends there.

Zero is undefined in itself - but not in the magnificent manner of

Infinity but in fact in the most contrasting pathetic manner!

Zero means naught/ nothing! It is emptiness, soonyam, vacant,

vacuum, the lowest point of reality.

The Laws governing zero are equally pathetic too!

1. 0 + 0 = 0

2. 0 - 0 = 0

3. 0 x 0 = 0

4. 0 / 0 = 0

Whether you add, subtract, multiply or divide two zeroes they still remain a zero!

If zero must have an existence of its own, a value attached to it, it

should first have the good sense and humility to attach itself,

behind the number 1 or one of its multiples.

If it tries to stand in front of the 1 arrogantly as 01, it will get

promptly dropped down like a hot-potato!

But if it adds itself behind the 1 as 10, 100, 1000, 10000, etc it

gains value by enhancing the value of 1.

Every JeevAthmA is a ZERO by itself! It will get value (Sat, Chit and

Anandham) only by associating with 1 the ParamAthma.
:hail:

Left by itself...it had been , it is and it will be a ZERO and nothing

more. Strangely the English word Soonyam also contains the

symbol oo of Infinity but does not not add the glory of oo to the 0!

During the recent family reunion I was amazed by the simple card game played by youngest grandson. It is called "Spot it".

What is Spot it?

It is the awesome fast-paced matching party game. The concept is simple: each of the 55 cards in the deck feature eight symbols, and there is always exactly one matching symbol between any two cards in the deck. Your goal is to be the quickest to find the match between two cards.

I have two questions to the Mathematical giants in the Forum.

1. What is the maximum number of images needed to make sure that any two of those 52 cards have JUST one image (no more and no less) in common?

2. The maximum number of cards which can be made out of those many images?

P.S

I know that there is a great reluctance in the part of these great minds in interacting with me. But let it not be considered as personal favor. Let it be for the benefit of the entire Forum!

Sorry for being pedantic: Your item 4) 0/0 is not 0 but it is indeterminate

Division by zero is tricky. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Division_by_zero

My glaring mistake was the only way to make people do daring entry in this thread! :)

But I also expected the answer for the puzzles in The Spot It game of cards!

Thank you for the useful link! I think all divisions are tricky and even dangerous!

I am sorry I did not read this post - My mind was preoccupied. But thanks for telling about this fantastic game. The
mathematics involved is a projective plan - I need to brush up on that to explain. You may be interested in looking at this website (no mathematical insight is given - but approached systematically) http://www.pleacher.com/mp/mlessons/stat/spotit.html
1) For your first question with 52 cards, the number of symbols/images will be 8. (as 7^2-7+1 < 55)
2) It will be 57 (8^2-8+1=57)

There is an Indian connection here - one of the persons who developed the projective plane idea is DK Ray Chowdhury
His coauthor is R.M. Wilson https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dijen_K._Ray-Chaudhuri

There should be 57 cards - To make it interesting they omitted two cards. Here is the complete list of 57 cards . Between any two cards there is exactly one common number - [In mathematical parlance it is projective plane of order 7,2] - To make kid friendly (and interesting, they substituted images/icons for numbers - If count the number of distinct images you ill see 57 in total] - Hope I answered your questions properly. Thanks again for suggesting people to look at this fascinating ("block design" or "projective plane" based) game
