The ethics and laws of AI - A spiritualist perspective

Well-known member
The human race is definitely now at crossroads with potentially powerful and maybe overwhelming technology making its mark. The technology is AI.

It is very incumbent upon any serious thinker to mull over the ramifications of this technology and its impact on mankind. It can no longer be brushed aside.

As a spiritualist my perspective will be different from that of scientists or technologists. We are two different breed. So here's my vision of what should be the cardinal laws governing AI and ethics that need to prevail.

The A in the AI should stay put. We shouldn't try make machines mimicking humans. They should only complement human capabilities. Also they can be better versions but we shouldn't try to make them evolve.

They should be used only for constructive purposes. This should be very diligently and strictly monitored and enforced and people severely punished for any deviation.

They should not be given autonomy especially in responsible and sensitive positions.

There should be a machine specially built monitoring all the activities of all other AI in use for any unethical behaviour and should be under a very responsible and eminent group of people. Very severe punishment for unethical and illegal use.

More later..

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly developing and becoming more and more integrated into our society. This raises a number of ethical concerns, including:

  • Privacy and surveillance: AI-powered surveillance systems can track our movements, collect our data, and predict our behavior. This raises concerns about our privacy and the potential for government or corporate overreach.
  • Bias and discrimination: AI systems can be biased, reflecting the biases of the data they are trained on. This can lead to discrimination against certain groups of people, such as people of color, women, or people with disabilities.
  • Transparency and accountability: AI systems are often opaque, meaning that it is difficult to understand how they make decisions. This can make it difficult to hold AI systems accountable for their actions.
  • Employment: AI is already being used to automate tasks that were once done by humans. This could lead to job losses and economic inequality.
  • Weaponization: AI could be used to develop autonomous weapons systems that could kill without human intervention. This raises concerns about the ethics of using AI in warfare.
These are just some of the ethical concerns that need to be addressed as AI continues to develop. It is important to have open and honest discussions about these issues so that we can ensure that AI is used for good and not for harm.

Here are some ways to mitigate the ethical impact of AI:

  • Transparency: AI systems should be transparent, so that people can understand how they make decisions. This will help to build trust and prevent discrimination.
  • Accountability: AI systems should be accountable for their actions. This means that there should be clear rules and regulations governing the use of AI, and there should be mechanisms for holding AI systems accountable for their actions.
  • Human oversight: AI systems should be subject to human oversight. This means that humans should be involved in the development, use, and regulation of AI systems.
  • Ethical AI principles: There are a number of ethical AI principles that can be used to guide the development and use of AI. These principles include fairness, non-discrimination, privacy, and accountability.
By addressing these ethical concerns, we can ensure that AI is used for good and not for harm.

But all these can be controlled by ehical governments and organisations. Who will control rough Nations and organisations?

Can AI development be monitored and controlled?

Yes, AI development can be monitored and controlled. There are a number of ways to do this, including:
  • Technical controls: These include things like setting technical limits on the capabilities of AI systems, such as the amount of data they can access or the types of decisions they can make.
  • Regulatory controls: These include laws and regulations that govern the development and use of AI systems. For example, the European Union has recently passed the Artificial Intelligence Act, which sets out a number of requirements for AI systems, such as transparency and accountability.
  • Social controls: These include things like public awareness and education about AI, as well as ethical guidelines for the development and use of AI systems.
It is important to note that monitoring and controlling AI development is a complex and challenging task. AI systems are constantly evolving, and it can be difficult to keep up with the latest developments. Additionally, there is a risk that technical controls could be circumvented, and regulatory controls could be bypassed.
However, the benefits of monitoring and controlling AI development outweigh the risks. By taking steps to monitor and control AI development, we can help to ensure that AI is used for good and not for harm.
Here are some specific examples of how AI development can be monitored and controlled:
  • Technical controls:
    • Limiting the amount of data that AI systems can access: This can help to prevent AI systems from being biased or discriminatory.
    • Restricting the types of decisions that AI systems can make: This can help to prevent AI systems from making harmful or unethical decisions.
  • Regulatory controls:
    • Requiring AI systems to be transparent: This means that people should be able to understand how AI systems make decisions.
    • Holding AI systems accountable for their actions: This means that there should be mechanisms for holding AI systems accountable for their actions, such as fines or penalties.
  • Social controls:
    • Raising public awareness about AI: This can help people to understand the potential risks and benefits of AI.
    • Developing ethical guidelines for the development and use of AI: This can help to guide the development of AI systems in a responsible and ethical way.
By taking steps to monitor and control AI development, we can help to ensure that AI is used for good and not for harm.

But genie is out of the bottle, and can not be bottled again.

I at times worry if I really like the current world.
I feel its becoming too much dependent on technology.

Even a simple trip to a store to buy anything isnt easy anymore.
You would be asked:
1) are you a member of the store?
2) would you like to join?
3) download our app.
4) give us your email so that we can email the receipt to you.

Usually I would just reply.." I just want to pay..kindly bill me"
Gone are the days where one just went to the counter and paid.

Then there are self check out counters too..no more humans handling the counter..this spells unemployment for humans.

I can sense destruction of the human race if we continue to allow technology to replace everything on earth.

If AI is going to do all the work..what about human employment?
Crime especially cyber crime will increase for sure.
Stress levels would go up too if we are totally dependent on technology.
Also original thought is decreasing..people have less attention span, poor memories and very reactive in behavior these days.

Older people are lucky..they escaped from technology..they are happy and someone else does everything technology related for them.

AI needs to be employed only for good but it should be understood unless the people who employ it have good intentions it cannot really happen. There will always be ways to circumvent it. So in general regulations and laws should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Having said that I am not arguing for no laws or regulations but pointing out the challenge in implementing them. There should be a chief scientific and knowledge advisor of impeccable credentials with plenary powers to look after the right use of AI. Strong deterrence and punishment for illegal or unethical use.

A super AI system should be developed to monitor all other AI.

Education and edification of society to think, act in the right way and support only the right public servants and politicians. Innovative use of AI for this purpose. Let this opportunity to elevate and edify people be used by the assistance of technology.

Intent is very important. It is accomplished by placing the right people at the helm of affairs and by systematic and innovative education.

I like your ideas and solutions for AI - doesn't it look a bit too utopian ? - but again, total AI control will destroy the human race : like digging our own graves . Very difficult question to answer , as you said in the last sentence - in the hands of a rogue Nation's dictator / PM / President - even the thought is worse than the hydrogen bomb !

Hi

I believe nothing should be dismissed as utopian. We have to aim for utopia. We can atleast reach one percent of it. That's really good enough given the current state of affairs. I believe AI has to be controlled by a super AI entrusted to super ethical people. Then things will be under control.
