The Dangers of Digging Up the Truth in India - TIME
form the latest time magazine online.
the corruption in the north has a stink of its own. i think indira gandhi still beat all the living politicians hollow, in her handling of banks' money for pay offs.
only God knows how much money was siphoned off from Bofors.
all i know personally, in the 80s, at time of acute cooking oil crisis, the state trading corporation of india, the sole monopoly allowed to import cooking oil, did so, and gave the distributing rights to a certain few in new delhi.
all of them, ofcourse, instant billionaires.
.. and i have seen, the slum folk near my house, for 1 ruppee of the eighties, getting two tablespoonsful of oil, for daily sauteeing. i can only imagine the misery in the north was worse.
