the present day apr 14 new year is more astro-logically coherent than astro-nomically jan 14.for science adherents jan 14 is on the dot.for the lover of vedic scriptures dec 21-22 is on the dot.for the lover of lord krishna ,start of shukla pratipadam of month of margasherasham is on the dot .in fact as a lord dattadreyan lover,i feel margasheerasham is the best start of the year for me

lest anyone give credit to MK for interfering with chithrai as our tamil new year, here is an excerpt, from another net blog

In 1921 Tamil scholars who gathered under the leadership of the "Tamil Kadal" (Sea) Maraimalai Adikal researched on the subject of the Tamil New Year. This committee included Tamil veterans like Tamil Thenral V. Kalyanundaram, Tamil Kavalar K.Subramaniumpillai, Saiva Periyar Satchithananthampillai, Navalar Somasundara Barathiyar, Navalar N.M. Vegkadasami Naddar and Muthamil Kavalar K.A.P. Visvanatham. After long deliberations they unanimously arrived at the conclusion that the Tamil New Year commenced on the first day of the Tamil month "Thai."

i do not know whether the bulk of tamil nadu celebrated 'chithrai thiru naal' or varusha pirappu. the common man still had his holiday. time alone will tell, if tamils will switch to thai.

our sri lankan cousins, especially in toronto, have preferred to maintain status quo. but then they are more traditional when it comes to preserving traditions
