surya darisanam during madhyanikam

One is supposed to look at the noon sun through a hole in interlocked fingers and pray "pashyema sharathasadam, jeevema sharada sadam, nandama sharada sadam, modama sharasadam, bhavama sharada sadam, shrunavama sharada sadam, prabravama sharada sadam, ajeethasyama sharada sadam" . Can anyone knowledgeable please advise as no book seems to outline this very clearly.

  1. for how long one should do this?
  2. Does one look through both eyes one after another?

Long viewing of sun at noon causes slight discomfort and also leads to tears later in the night.

Thanks in advance for the clarifications.
