Some are new names. The ones I said are not generally new one but shortened local sort of names; or names used differently in earlier decades or centuries. Some names found to be difficult to pronounce, were christened conveniently by the English. As I write I remembered another name "ThaNigai".

Kancheepuram is Kanchi
Tiruvallikkeni is Triplicane

Going Pan India;
Bejawada is Vijayawada
Cocanada to Kakinada (very funny indeed)
Gurugram (Traditional name) became Gurgaon (Modern name).
Bombay (Modern name) became Mumbai ( Traditional name)

:hail:

In Tamilnadu certain towns as below are known as otherwise (shortened name). I have a very short list. But let me see how it expands:
Puduvai - Puducherry
Karandai - Karunthattangudi
Kudandai - Kumbakonam
Mayilai - Mayilaaduthurai (Or, Mylapore?)
Mukavai - ?
Thillai - Chidambaram
Thanjai - Thanjavur.

How many more are there?
Mayiladuthurai = Mayavaram?

Here are two more to the list:
சத்தியமங்கலம் - சத்தி
உடுமலைப் பேட்டை - உடுமலை

Brahmanyan,
Bangalore.

இதை எப்படி மறந்தேன்? :becky:

தஞ்சை = தஞ்சாவூர்

புரசை = புரசைவாக்கம்

Looking at Pan India,
Trivandrum became Thiruvananthapuram
Cannanore became kannur
Benares became Varanasi
Baroda became Vadodara
Cochin became Kochi

Your own city seems to have two slightly different names! :)

Dombivli
or Dombivali is a city in Thane district, Kalyan tehsil in Maharashtra, India. It is located about twenty kilometres from Thane and about fifty kilometres from the city of Mumbai. The population of the city, according to the 2011 census is 2,293,000,[SUP][citation needed][/SUP]. It is an important suburb of Thane. This place is a cosmopolitan city. The local community is known as Agri. They speak a language called Agri Bhasha. However, Agri bhasha is becoming more of extinct due to the rapid spread of the state language Marathi. The Agri community is either rich or poor. They were basically owning the land in and around dombivli. However, over the last 3 decades, they have sold their land to real estate companies, real estate builders for construction. Thus, they made money by selling land or developing houses and selling or giving on rent. The Agri community has a negligible presence and is a minority in dombivli; however, being the localities they hold huge sway over the political environment and real estate business in and around dombivli.

Yes, the place belongs to Agri community. They are rich, powerful and dreaded to some extent. Yes, what was a village, became a town and now is a blooming city and peaceful and cosmopolitan. More than half of the city commutes to Mumbai daily and it is a city of culture and many technocrats, finance experts and artistes of various kind live here. I think till today any community feels itself at home here. The pioneer migrants were Brahmins of Mumbai-Girgaum and Tamil Brahmins. And so on and so forth. You are welcome to see a mini-India.
