Learned members to please let know the significance of shashtiabhdha purthi [I know that one is now 60 years aged].
Why some rituals are to be performed at 60 why not at 50?
who are eligible to perform the rituals [currently being done , homams, shanthi etc etc.] either one survivor or both should be alive.
If there is a person who is unmarried and aged 60 , is he also to be participant.
The couple or single who is guest or who is partcipant in tjhsi occassion.
More clear authentic details with reasons attributed at attaining 60 warranting rituals performing.
Can all religion do this or only hindu and that too Brahmins.
What si at 60, 70 and 80. What about at 90 and 100.
wishes and greetings

May be it has something to do with the Tamil almanac as per which there are 60 years which repeats after each cycle.A person completes one cycle when he is 60.
80, I have heard some significance as I have heard elders say.If a person lives 80 years he would have sahasra chandra dharsan...1ooo full moons during his life.

Dear Dr. Sundaram sir,When you are turning 60, the year will be the same, the nakshtra will come on the same day. It denotes a complete round of all the planets in your lifetime and also the completion of a whole year cycle. So, this auspicious time is considered as a rebirth to the person. It is ofcourse a shanti karma, now turned to an enjoyable marriage occassion. A right divertion. There are many such things sir. While starting of 60, I mean completing 59 years, ugraradha santhi should be done. While 60- shasthiapthapoorthi, 70- bhimaratha santhi, and 80- sadhabhishekam, 100- kanakabhishekam.PranamsThe ritual of celebrating ugraradhasanthi is getting slowly dimished by years pasting. But 60, 70, 80 are all celebrating well by us.

Thank you sir, I was waiting for this clarifications by any one. Thank you so much. God bless you.

Durga ji,

How do we celebrate the 59th birthday or the ugraradhasanthi? What should be done then?
Also I know the 70th birthday is celebrated as the bhimaradhasanthi. Is this only for men or can it be performed for the women too?

Sun Takes 12 months(1 year) to go round all 12 Zodaics.Guru takes 12 years--sani takes 30 years.Lowest common multiple of 1,12, and 30 is >>>60.In Hindu astronomy 6,12,18,24,30,60,(multiples of 6 is very important).
Smallest Hindu unit of time is 0.4 seconds=Kshanam.
60 kshanam=1 Vinaadi(24 seconds)--60 vinaadis=1 Naazhi(24 minutes)--60 Naazhi=1 Soura(Surya>>Soura) day--30 days=1 month--60days=1 Rithu--6 Riths=1 Soura year--6 months= 1 Ayanam(Part-1-Sutram-3-Kaala Kriya-Arya Bhattattheeyam)

I have some urgent work now-if possible ,I will discuss in detail a little later.

Ugraradhasanthi is one-day function (I simply say which we did for our father last year). The vadhyars said that this also as a santhi karma. Rudram has been chanted. A homa was also performed. Vadhyar said, it is to please a type of rudra called, "Ugraradhan". A variety of dhanams were provided (Ardhra vasthra (wet clothes), bell, bronze cups, umbrella, book, sandals), Finally a cup filled with cotton (noone came forward to get that. Finally, a person get that. That too, my father placed it in the floor and from there he take that.). They said that is the important dhana. Vadhyars performed abhishekam with the holy water to my parents and thus it concludes. We did it in our home itself.

I dont know about bhimaradha santhi... I expect some known persons to share this.

I dont know whether this can be done for both?? usually the days are calculated only with the men. So, am not sure what sastras say in this regard. Swami ji is the right person to solve this...

There is a belief that performing the Sashtiabdapoorthy at Thirukadaiyur is sreshtam. Is there any link between the sthala puranam and performance of this particular function in this punya sthalam?

Dear Sridharan sir

In this sthalam only swami protected sage Markandeya and also provided his "CHIRANJEEVITHVAM". The life of markandeya has been started once again from this temple. So, it has been believed that doing shastiabthapoorti is sreshtam here. Also, in the shrine of "Shri Kalasamharamurthi" you can see shiva who has placed his left leg over Yamadharmaraja and straight opposite to his shrine, a separate shrine for yama with hands folded is also there. Just to get rid of "Yemabayam" and also to consider the 60 year life as a completion and starting of a new life, Sashtiapthapoorthi is celebrating here.

It is said in this sthlam markandaya [son of mrikandu] was saved from death at his young age by lord siva and hence this place is sanctified for ayul vrudhi poojas, homa and prayers. Naturaly we wish our parents longevity with good health and peace. Shastiabtha poorthi being significant in one's life's phase, celebrating the ritual here is sacred. Unfotunately this is so commercialised nowadays depending upon one's budget pacakges are advised. One feel like having completed an obligation rather than feeling a fulfilling & satisfying experience.

A. In the "padal petra sthalams" list, there are 5 mayanams referred. Mayanam means cremation ground . SIVA is told to be in mayanams generally. But these following temples are told to have highest spiritual importance. Mayanams here are nothing but temples.

1.Kachi mayanam ( kachi in tamil is Kancheepuram)
2.Kazhi mayanam ( kazhi is sirkazhi)
3.Veezhi mayanam ( Veezhi is Thiruveezhimizhalai)
4.Naalur Mayanam (near Kumbakonam)
5.Kadavur mayanam ( kadavur is Thirukkadaiyur )

The temple of mayanam is located adjacent to Thirukadayur main temple. From this temple only markandeya did his sivapooja daily. So, while doing sashtiabhthapoorthi it will also reminds us that by doing shivapooja we can attain even "Chiranjeevithvam".

B. The swami (lingam) is totally made up of elixir (Amirtham) and hence, the name "amirthakadeswarar" (When devas and asuras churned the ocean, they forget both Ganapathy and shiva. So, ganapthi stealed the elixir pot and kept in this sthalam. The kshetra Ganapthy is hence called as "Kalla Vaarana Vinayagar". The pot he kept turned to a linga and that swami only we are seeing now according to the legends). So by simply seeing this swami itself, because of the power of elixir, our lives will be extended.

C. This temple is one among the veertana sthalams. In this sthala, lord shiva kicked Yama. This happened since yama thought that he was superior and noone can interfere in his work. To remove his ahankara, swami kicked him. If he kicked yama with his right leg, he will died sure. Since swami kicked with his left leg (the leg of ambal), he left him alive. So, to shatter the ego, visiting of this sthalam is preferred.

d. During the Rule of the King Saraboji, Lordess Abirami, for the sake of her votary Abirami Battar, has thrown her stud (Thaadangam) towards the sky during the new moon day. The stud later become round shaped and the new moon day turned into a full-moon Day (Pournami). The votary Abirami battar has sung the famous"Abirami Andhadhi" praising Lordess Abirami to save him from death, sentenced by the King. Lordess Abirami excused the king and gave her blessings to the votary. Thus the life of subramanya bhattar (Abhirami bhattar) has been saved here in this sthalam.

Thus this sthalam has saved lives of Markandeya and Abirami bhattar and because of these, we are celebrating shastiapthapoorthi here.

NOTE: FOR CHENNAITES, THE STHALAM LOCATED IN VELACHERY (SHRI KARUNAMBIKA SAMEDHA SHRI DANDEESWARAR) TEMPLE IS ALSO A GOOD ALTERNATE, WHERE YAMA PRAYED THE LORD AND GOT BACK HIS DANDAM AND THEN STARTED HIS FUNCTIONS. SO, THIS STHALAM IS ALSO CONSIDERED EQUALLY IMPORTANT AS THIRUKADAIYUR.

I have seen in Mumbai, that the Mayanam is looked upon as a nomal place. In many of these mayanams, caretaker of the place lives happily with his family ,inside the same compound. There may be a temple also inside the compound.

For about four years, I was (like many hundreds others)using a path inside a Cemetry
as a shortcut to reach my place of work, even in night. There were no misgivings. There used to be people selling lemon drinks, etc.The Hindu Smasaanam and Muslim burial ground were(and are still) side by side.On a particular day, important for Muslims the place used to smell sweet with all perfumes, when they pray for the departed souls. It will be crowded like a festival throughout night. (For info, it is Chandanwadi Smasaanam, near New Marine Lines).

Dear Suryakasyapa ji

There is nothing to fear for mayanams. Is there a devil worst than we people??? To get rid of the fear only, these 5 sthalams have been mentioned. Anyhow, these are almost noway connected with actual burialground. Whenever I come with my brother, we came in a shortcut, for which we have to cross a cremationground. Nothing we felt bad till today. It is the place with peace. Thats all. If we people enter there, even that atmosphere will get nuisanced. (I think already thats happening).

As you said, there will be a small temple (Almost a shrine). But, the presiding god will be (AIyanar (in the yard where we pass, aiyanar is there in a small shrine), madan, or some other village deities and we cannot expect our normal deities there. I think even shivalingam is not found there.

The main thing is the presence of shiva. Shiva is the god who can provide peace even to the dead. There is no need of worship there. The place is for resting and nothing more is required there. So worshipping the burial ground is not in our religious practice. Whereas both christians and muslims have that.
