Is ugraratha shanthi homam necessary if one is going to do sashtiaptha poorthi?

It must also be done as we are not sure about our life time. and also the life time of our closest relatives. so it is better to do it in simple way.kindly advice us as to how to do this in detail.

UgraRatha Shanthi homam is performed at the completion of 59 years and at the start of the 60[SUP]th[/SUP] year for a male. It is the homam conducted a year before one’s SashtiAptha Poorthi. The age of 60 is considered to be perilous for a human being. To cross it and complete one’s 60[SUP]TH[/SUP] year is hazardous as this particular period can cause ill health to that person. In order to have a Shanthi homam beforehand and initiate a smooth journey of one’s 60[SUP]Th[/SUP] year, Ugraratha Shanthi Homam is conducted.

‘Ugraratha’ means the harsh times which may harm a man during his 60[SUP]th[/SUP]year. It is also a prayer to bestow spiritual life upon a man after his 60[SUP]TH[/SUP]year as he should have been after materialistic pursuits prior to this age. So, UgraRatha Shanthi homam is conducted to appease the hard times that may cause harm to a person when he enters his 60[SUP]TH[/SUP] year in life. Ganapathy homam and Navagraha homam are also conducted along with UgraRatha Shanthi homam.

Tomorrow, 27th January 2017 is Mauni amavasya.
Mauni Amavasya occurs in Maga month during January and February as per the traditional calendar followed in North India. It is also called Maghi Amavasya and is the last Amavasya before the occurrence of Sivarathri. As the term Maunide notes, Mauni Amavasya is a day for observing silence and through that silence seeking self-realization and spiritual wisdom. When the mind is silent, it is set up on deep meditation to take a journey into soul and realize self.
Mauni Amavasya is considered powerful since the sun and the Moon enter the sign of Capricorn on this day. On the day of Mauni Amavasya, people take a bath in holy rivers like the Ganges. It is considered equivalent to conducting Rajasuya yagna and Aswamethayagna. And on this day, it is considered sacred to donate clothes to the needy and the poor, offer food to the downtrodden, help the kushta rogi and conduct homams.
