No more Rail Budget? Niti Ayog note to PMO terms it as ‘failed’ exercise


This February’s Rail Budget, presented by Minister Suresh Prabhu, may have been the last.
The NDA government has sought the Railway Ministry’s comments on a 20-page note sent by NITI Aayog to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), arguing in favour of doing away with the high-profile annual exercise.
The note, titled “Dispensing with the Rail Budget” and jointly authored by Aayog member and economist Bibek Debroy and Kishore Desai, Officer on Special Duty, argues that the exercise had failed to be of use to the sector and become a “mechanism to announce popular measures”.
Rail Bhawan sources said that the Department of Economic Affairs, the Finance Secretary and the Cabinet Secretary will also be part of ongoing deliberations on this issue.

besides railway budget....every time...railway increases fare and issue many new rules after budget....so no need of separate

During British period in 1910, 1920s, there was a necessity for a good network for ruling the country.Railways catered their ambition.Given the huge potential and it's revenue base, the railways finances were separated from general finances in the year 1924.But now the railways finances are just 15% of the national budget. Railway Board has become unwieldy now. Railway Budget has become more of a political exercise than a financial necessity. The railways are very much essential but so others like food, roads, water etc. Are we having separate food budget or separate road budget?It should be treated just like other departments. Hence it high time to be shelved.

Finally wisdom has dawned. This British legacy should have been thrown out log ago. I welcome this move.
