Of the 85 kids who have won the National Spelling Bee, only one became an instant movie star.
For the millions who watched back in 1999, her face is frozen in time. She'll always be the 14-year-old girl from Tampa, Fla., with the glasses and dark shoulder-length hair, her arms raised while leaping for joy.

She became a role model for those who realized it's OK to be nerdy. She became a trend-setter, starting a run in which 10 of 14 national bee winners have been Indian-American, including the last five.

It is that time of year again when everyone’s favorite guilty pleasure returns. The 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee will begin on Wednesday with the preliminary rounds that will help shape the field of participants for the finals, which will air on ESPN Thursday night in prime time.

Here is all of the information you will need to catch the premier televised scholastic competition:
When:Wednesday, May 29 and Thursday, May 30Location: Washington, D.C.

Semifinals—Thursday, May 30 at 2:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. EDT on ESPN2

They should rename these competitions. In spelling bee or geographic bee competitions you only see PIO.
May be they should called PIO spelling contest.

Most of the American Indians are born there in US, in this year 2013, very few of them only participate.

This year the 4 finalist of Geography bee were all of Indian Origin.
Last 5 years the spelling bee champions all have been PIO, mostly from Andhra Pradesh.
Scripps national Champions
2012 The winner was Snigdha Nandipati from San Diego, California. Her winning word was guetapens. She was the fifth consecutive Indian American, and the tenth since 1999, to win. The runner-up was Stuti Mishra from West Melbourne, Florida, who misspelled schwarmerei and was eliminated.

2011 Sukanya Roy, of South Abington Township, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania

2010 Anamika Veeramani, from North Royalton, Ohio

2009 Kavya Shivashankar of Olathe, Kansas

2008 The winner was Sameer Mishra, a 13-year-old eighth grader at West Lafayette Junior-Senior High School, in Indiana.

By the end of the First day a maximum of 50 spellers will advance to Thursday's semifinals.
