Sapparam Processions

I am interested in Sapparam Processions and the rituals associated with them. I have been working on a firewalking ritual at a temple in Fiji, which includes nightly Supparam processions. The temple is a South Indian (Tamil) Temple.

Does anyone know the correct term for the umbrella-like item which is usually found at the rear of the Sapparam, and which appears to be used to cover the head of the deity being processed. Also does anyone know the significance of the item.

thank you in advance for your help.
