Rituals

My son is living in USA They have to perform Ayush Homam for his Girl child in India. But due to visa appointment they are unable to do it in that specific date. As we the grand parents are with him now can we do this in USA by advancing by month. That is before completing one year of the baby. Please give your advice.

Om namo Narayanaya.
Dear Shri.Venkatesan Ramanujan,
Suprabhatam. Subhamastu.
ஆசீர்வாதங்கள் to your son, daughter-in-law and child/-ren.
Coming to your Vedic-ritual query on 11/6/26-
Congratulations for becoming a proud grand father and greetings to the proud parents for the arrival of SriLakshmi.
According to the traditional Hindu Vedic practices, Āyuṣya Homa (Ayushya Homam) is generally performed to pray for the child’s health, longevity, and well-being, often around the completion of the first year on his / her birth star Tamil month and even on subsequent birthdays. However, the maiden birth day is good to be performed on one year “completion”, essentially on the day of birth star and Tamil month ( if twice the star is coming in same month then first coming date is preferred).
However, there is no universal Vedic ‘rule’ requiring it to be performed on the ‘exact birthday’. Different traditions follow different customs:
  • On or near the first birthday (birth star & month): This is the most common practice and advised.
  • A little earlier (for example, a few weeks or a month before): Usually acceptable if the exact date is inconvenient, provided an auspicious (śubha) day and nakshatra are chosen.
  • A little later: Also generally acceptable. Many families perform it on the child’s birth nakshatra in a nearby month, whenever circumstances permit.
  • Birth Nakshatra preference: Vedic priests prefer performing it on the child’s janma nakshatra rather than the Gregorian calendar birthday.

The guiding principle in most Dharma and Gṛhya traditions is that the sankalpa (intent), proper procedure, and devotion are more important than strict adherence to a single date, unless a specific family, regional, or Vedic tradition of the individual’s family prescribes otherwise.
If you are following a particular lineage (such as Smarta, Vaishnava, Madhva, Sri Vaishnava, etc.), it is best to consult your family priest, eldest person in your family or family astrologer or family Acharyaswamigal, as customs differ.
In general, performing the Ayushya Homa up to a month before or after the first birthday is commonly accepted when done for practical reasons and with an appropriate sankalpa. Please adhere to the birth star. It has real significance.
If this divine ritual gets delayed (avoid as much as possible), no problem. But, please perform it for the best health and prosperity of child. It has more significance for child’s life ahead than merely an entertainment ceremony (for others?), as some think, these days. Performing the homam by parents on first birth anniversary of a baby is more important than decoration, photography, feast, party, etc. It’s my suggestion, as an elderly person.
Please pass on my ashirwadangal -
“आयुरारोग्यसौभाग्यं पुत्रपौत्राभिवर्धनम् ।
विद्यां श्रीं च बलं तेजो देहि मे परमेश्वर:॥”
to the baby SriLakshmi on the day you celebrate her birthday.
For your son and daughter in law and all youngsters-
आयुरारोग्यऐश्वर्याभिवृद्धिरस्तु!
शुभं भूयात्।

As practiced for ages in our Vedic rituals, postponed rituals are there but generally not to prepone ritual. Again, reiterating to consult your family elders.

Yes, generally that's fine.If they can't do it on the exact date, doing the Ayush Homam little earlier before the child's first birthday is usually acceptable. Сheck with your family priest to make sure it fits your tradition.
