PROFESSIONAL COURSES - CHARTERED ACCOUNTANCY (CA) / COST & WORKS ACCOUNTANT (CWA) / COMPANY SECRETARY (CS)



Rajesh Singhal is a qualified Chartered Accountant. He is currently employed with a leading MNC in the Telecommunication Industry and has work experience of more than 3 years. His core specialization area is Taxation.



​1) What is basic difference in CA/ICWA/CS professional courses? Can one pursue a combination of these courses?

There is big difference among these three professional courses. CA course focuses more on finance / taxation areas,whereas CS focuses on Corporate Compliance areas and CWA aims to comply with mainly Costing. Although there are some topics which remain same in all these courses like Taxation and Accounts. Of course, one can pursue all three degrees, which will definitely give more advantage / priority than other candidates.

2) What are the various methods of preparations for these exams? What is the most adopted method by students in general?

There are two methods of preparing for these exams: 1) Self Study 2) Private Coaching Institutes.
In current scenario, most adopted method for preparing for the exam is private coaching institute because it is quite easy to understand the concepts in classes rather than self-preparation.

3) What is the starting pay scale for fresher CA in the current market scenario? (Please provide a broad range)

In current market situation, one can expect INR 5-7 lacs as starting salary for an average candidate. This range would not apply to rankers or who have scored very good percentage say more than 60% in CA exam.

4) Should one start own practice immediately after completion of course or gain some work experience in the Industry?

This depends on individual’s future goals. If someone wishes to move in to practice, then it is advisable to gain some 2-3 years industry experience. Thereafter, he might have better network and experience for getting clients.

5) Is there any scope for jobs abroad? If yes, which countries recognize these professional courses?

Yes. There are chances to get jobs abroad but you have to acquire membership of those countries like USA, Canada, UK. ICAI and ICWAI have tie ups with these countries. So, one can get membership of these foreign accounting bodies by fulfilling some criterias. Once you get the membership you are eligible to get a job in that country.

6) What are the further study options after completion of Professional Courses?

This depends on individual’s future plans. If someone wishes to make a career in Investment Banking then one can purse Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Professional course. There are many certification courses available for getting specialization in particular field after completion of these professional courses.

7) Provide any other valuable industry specific information for the students who want to pursue a career in the above field.

One should be very clear with vision. One can choose among Consultancy, Manufacturing or Service as preferred choice. Type of Industry experience make a great sense in future career options.
