Drive is on to regain the lost green cover....

Post Vardah: Plantation drives on in city

Chennai: Vardah became synonymous with destruction as it uprooted a number of trees depriving the city of its bio-diversity. Loosing the existing trees in an already polluted city became a cause of concern for residents. But fear not, many NGOs and like-minded people have come forward to donate saplings to restore the city's greenery.

The Senior Citizens Group of Besantnagar (SCGOBN) has started a tree plantation drive at Besant Nagar named 'Green Chennai - Once again'. The association's president V Chandrasekhar, said, "We will continue the drive and I urge people who wanted to plant trees to come forward. Those who wish to plant trees can contact, 944572944 or [email protected]".

Similarly, environmentalist and founder of Tree Bank, G Mullaivanam has also swung into action to restore Chennai's green cover. "We plan to double the tree cover by planting two trees for a fallen tree. Lush green areas like Adyar, Besant Nagar, West Mambalam, Ashok Pillar, KK Nagar and Virugambakkam have been found to be severely hit by the cyclone with 2613 trees uprooted," he said.

Chennai’s green cover faced the full force of Cyclone Vardah last week, as its winds gusting up to 140kmph blew away more 17,000 trees in the city. College campuses across Chennai bore the brunt of the cyclone, with hundreds of trees uprooted or damaged.
At the Madras Institute of Technology, its alumni together with the student team “Athenaeum” have taken up the responsibility of making the campus green again. Starting a campaign to raise funds on crowdsourcing website, Ketto, the MIT alumni, write, “Tropical cyclone Vardah has hit Chennai hard and has uprooted almost all the trees of MIT causing heavy loss of property and damage. Several of our students and staff have been working day and night to help clear the wreckage. It will take several years to restore what has been lost but the sooner we start; the sooner we get there.”
…..
"We are contacting non-government organizations also on how to re-treat the trees, plant new saplings and repair the property damaged," the alumnus said.

They hope to raise Rs 5 lakhs for the campaign. "The campaign will go on till January 15, 2017 and then we will finalize a proposal and start work from January," he said.

Sir,

Here is the report....

Cyclone Vardah

The very severe cyclonic storm left a trail of damage, breaking and uprooting a number of trees in the campus.

A day after cyclone Vardah ripped through Chennai, the exit gate of the IIT- Madras campus, opening towards the Sardar Patel Road, stood shut on Tuesday.

It is because a huge tree that had fallen on the compound wall had caused the wall to break.

Spread across an area of 617.8 acres, the campus is home to lush green trees and is also called the city's green lung. The very severe cyclonic storm left a trail of damage, breaking and uprooting a number of trees and blocking some major roads in the campus.

Speaking to The News Minute, Barani (24), a student from the Mechanical Engineering department, said, "Yesterday (Monday), the trees were continuously falling due to the high-speed wind. Most of us stayed inside the hostel. It was heavily raining as well. We also had a power cut since Monday morning.”
