Pongu Sani temple is located at Thirukollikadu village near Keeralathur which is about 17-18 kms from Mannarkudi and Thiruthuraipoondi towns . The presiding deity here is Lord Shiva who is known as Agneeswaran as He gave salvation from curse to Lord Agni at this place. Lord Sani has a separate sannidhi which is considered one of three most auspicious and important Sani kshetras , other two being Thirunallar near Karaikal and Koochanur near Theni. The legend says that Lord Sani was once very upset that people fear him and blame him for all their misfortunes while he is only carrying out his assigned tasks based on people’s karma. Lord Shiva pacified him and said that henceforth he would be known as Saniswaran ( the only navagraha to carry Easwaran with his name) and that those devotees who worship him at this temple will be bestowed with all prosperity and will not suffer the adverse effects of Sani transitions. It is said that King Nala got his salvation from Sani dasa at Thirunallar and got his kingdom and wealth back after worshipping Pongu Sani at this temple. While Sani baghwan can be worshipped on any day here, Saturday is considered most auspicious . The temple is open full day without break on Saturdays. Another unique feature of this temple is that Navagrahas are placed in the form Tamil letter Pa in which they face each other while in all other temples navagrahas will not see each other . We visited this temple recently and had good darshan.
