We see that the spiritual people believe in spiritual self as the real self. The mental and physical self are not considered the real self. But do we totally accept that view? I believe that as long as one lives in the physical world, there is a reality to the physical and mental selves. The yardstick is anything that exerts influence has reality. Till we attain moksha the physical world constantly influence our outer selves. But may be to a fully spiritually evolved person, there is no impact of physical and mental energies and hence the outer selves are not real.
So it is a relative thing depending on one's stage in evolution whether to say that physical and mental selves are real or not.
