Praveen calls it
Panchamruta Snanam

i.e bathing (e.g. the Shiva-Lingam) with five death-defying items. However, he actually lists not five, but seven items, i.e. milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar, fruit (juice?), and water.

The practice in reality as I know it is to emphasise the fruit ingredient. In addition to the omnipresent banana, we add grapes, dates, sweet limes, pomegranates, jack-fruit, mangoes, guava, cherries, pears, apples, jambus.

These peeled and seeded fruits are thoroughly mixed and squeezed together to form a consistent and harmonious whole, and a little ghee, a little honey, some milk and some curd are added to the mixture and vigorously blended in.

No sugar is used, whether white, brown, or black. whether made from sugarcane juice, from coconut-flower toddy, from palm-tree juice, from riverine reeds, or other sources.

The final well-integrated product is called panchaamrutham. It can be offered to the deity as a neiveidhyam. But more often, it is used -- after shuddodaka snaanam with water, and pancha-gavya snaanam with a mixture of cow's milk, curd, ghee, and very smal;l; amounts of cow's urine and cow-dung -- as an important abhishega-dravyam.

After the abhishegam, as much of the dravyam as possible is collected and given back to the kartha and his family as prasaadam. They distribute it among devotees present at the temple as daanam.

I have never in my life seen individual ingredients being offered as abhishega-dravyams, as Praveen claims. Certainly not "sugar", nor whole fruits.

It appears to me that Praveen is misusing the prokshana manthrams chanted during sandhyaa-vandanam and other manthrams such as the neiveidhya manthram to suit his own purpose. This is not correct.

S Narayanaswamy Iyer

Additionally, Praveen seems to have never heard of the proper abhhishega manthram -- devasya thvaa savituhu prasave........

He falls back on the prokshana manthram -- apo hi shtaa mayobhuvasthaa........

hi

panchmruta snanam basically represents FIVE ELEMENTS.....like water, air etc....mainly in snanam...water is

main element.....which is main life support of all living beings..

wiki says for Panchamirtham
Cow Milk, curd, honey, liquid jaggery, and ghee are mixed together. However, there may be certain regional variations in ingredients. Most south Indians add ripe banana[2] as well. Panchamrita is an Ayurvedic preparation but has been manipulated in several places to cut costs and increase keeping value.

पयोदधि घृतं चैव मधु च शर्करायुतं ।
पञ्चामृतं मयानीतं स्नानार्थं प्रतिगृह्यताम् ॥

Some people use sugar instead of jaggery, which is not accepted by all, as sugar is not a natural element like jaggery and sugar is sometimes refined using bone charcoal which makes it inappropriate to use for pooja.

In Palani Murugan temple, Tamil Nadu, Panchamrita is used in abisheka and distributed as prasad. This panchamirtam consist of banana, sugar, ghee, honey, seedless dates, cardamom and sugar candy.[3] The banana used is the Virupatchi variety, which grows only in the Palani hills and has very low water content.[4]

Keralites may also include tender coconut. Some recipes also include grapes.

we say sakkara pongal but we use jaggery
here sakkara means sugar मीठा as aska or sugar sakkarai was by britishers/
a small town named asika in odisha where they have built a factory for making refines white sugar.
Asika is a town and a Notified Area Council in Ganjam district in the state of Odisha, India .Fondly known as the sugar city of India. Asika is the 2nd largest city in district of Ganjam. Asika is a major commercial and transportation hub of Ganjam district. Asika is situated between river Badanadi and holy river Rushikuliya.
  • Asika Sugar Factory'Bold text'- Asika sugar factory is the 1st Sugar Factory in Asia and it established in 1824.The plant is located in Asika town.Aska co.op sugar industries limited is a large scale industry provides stable income to more than 35000 families.
This is one of the oldest in India build by Minchin Saheb in British time. Along with the factory at Nellikuppam near Cuddalore, it was managed by Parry and Co. Due to this factory the Asika Town is known as Sugar City.

When one thinks of Asika Cooperative Sugar Industries Ltd., many things come to memory, its history, the pioneers in the field, the hardy local farmers, its workmen, the dedicated bureaucrats, the support it got at highest levels, the institutional infrastructure that helped, and how it overcame so with a background of its heritage of being the story of sugar in Asia and the place where Asia's 1st Sugar Factory was established in 1824.

The jaggery mill which was started in the year 1848 by the name "Asika Sugar Works and Distillery Ltd." by 'Parry and Co. Madras' which met with huge losses for lack of supervision and other transport bottlenecks. Thereafter, Fredrick Josheph Vivian Minchin, the Book Keeper of Biny & Co. purchased the said factory and with the new Sugar Technology obtained from Germany designed and rebuilt the factory in 1856.

Wondering whether you are mixing pancha-bhootham with pancha-amrutham?

For example, do we heap earth (mud?) on the shiva-lingam and call it bhoo-snaanam? And try to burn down the black granite cylindrical column with fire for agni-snaanam?

(By the way, is not air the main support of all living things? Can life exist in an airless environment?)

S Narayanaswamy Iyer

dear sir, well said pancha-bhootham will not and should not be used for abhishegam.
pancha-amrutham is different yes, well said
in this context why the sun TV shows during abhishegams ( in the mornings) the idols
except shiva lingams, are invariably draped. is it because of the drawing hall where TV set is placed?
the cloth of yesteryear soaked passes through which the abhishega theertham
is offered as prasad for us to drink, instead of age old vigraha??
In vedic times people used to bathe in rivers and lakes so covering is understandable.
all sthapathis drape the idol in their stone work.
i shudder to think of the water passed through the cloth to gulp

Dear Sri Nairheu

TV shows only cater to the crowd. The perpetrators of this fiction value (court) only popularity, not authenticity.

Just go to the temples and see what is actually done.

If you are disgusted, do not "shudder to think of the water passed through the cloth to gulp."

Feel free to do abhishegam as you wish at home, if you know the manthrams.
