Dear Sangom,

need your help here.I was studying my text and this shloka was there;

yat tvagasthigataM pApaM dehe tiShThati mAmake |
prAshanaM panchagavyasya dahatu agnirivendhanam.

It is stated in my book that this shloka is recited while taking Pancagavyam.I just want to know is Pancagavyam edible?

Pancha kavya is being sold in Arya vaidhya sala kottakal for some symptoms of mental disorders. Ayurveda system of treatment is giving this to many patients as medicine.

Smt. Renuka,

pancagavyam, five products of (from) the cow, is supposed to have great purificatory powers. It is a pure physical mixture of milk, curds, butter, cowdung and urine of cow. I have not ever tasted it because of psychological revulsion, but I have seen orthodox tabras drinking it by using the religious spoon called "uddharaNi" and feeling so purified that they will try to keep some physical distance from their own family members for a few days (probably) till the effect (kick?) of the Panchagavya wanes off ! I will suggest that you try it only if you are so vigorously motivated to burn out, like fire burning the dry logs (दहत्वग्निरिवेन्धनम्), all the sins which have entered into your body (देहे तिष्ठति मामके)and remains in the skin and bones (यद् त्वग् अस्ति गतम् पापम्).

My neighbour, a typical middle-aged tabra lady who has made crores and crores in the gulf, has employed a firm of landscaping specialists to maintain her small compound (9 cents plot). These people make panchagavyam once in a while, keep it for a few days till it becomes fit as a manure and then decant the light liquid on top and spray it on all the plants and trees. The lady has a very luxuriant garden but the neighbours have to suffer the obnoxious smell for days!

This undue importance to cow (and its products) from the vedic period of beef-eating, came into the hindu thinking, imo, probably when a new era of kindness to animals etc., started.

Dude..you got me wrong here. I am not the sort of person who will commit all sins and expect God to forgive me by trying to act holy or indulging in any ritual to "cleanse" myself.
Many think they can be Ajamila and call for God in the last moments and actually think they will be saved.
I feel a person who truly loves God will never expect anything from God.

If I have done wrong I am not scared to face the consequences..be it even rotting in hell. Why should I expect God to bail me out if I didnt know how to behave in the 1st place.

Thats why I dont even believe in Shraddha practices for ancestors..cos why should any ancestor be in hell in the first place if he or she knew how to behave well.
This just gives the licence for anyone to do as they please in this Loka and think that they will be bailed out in the after world.
Isnt that some form of corruption too? So..do we need another Anna Hazare to fast for that sort of corruption too?

Further more ancestors also should know to move on with their Karmic cycle.
Whats the use of singing Karmanyevaadhikaraste maa phalesu kadacana if after death we await the fruits of a Shraddha!!

So dear Sangom..Dont worry I am really not into any ritual. All I like to do is read books and try to gain some sort of understanding.

May be I am being too sensitive, old fashioned may be. Agree or disagree with him, Shri Sangom sir is an erudite elder. Even my two US born and raised kids won't address an older person, even ones with nowhere near the intellect of Shri Sangom, as "dude".

But this is the way of the modern Hindus I suppose, oh well!

If you got a problem with what I do..I give a damn but dont use this as an excuse to bash Hindus here. You dont need to compare me with your kids either.Since when they are my yardstick?

Ya I am a modern Hindu!!! So what!!! You got a problem dear Orthodox Hindu who claims to be an Atheist?

You dont mess with me..I wont mess with you.You mess with me..you know me well.I am capable of anything.

Shri tbs, Shri Nara, Smt Renuka,

Please do not take a small point and make it into a flammable issue. I personally did not know what this "dude" meant till someone, sn I think, clarified it to Shri Kunjuppu in some other thread. It seems it is the modern eqivalent of "Dey" டேய் in Tamil. May be we did not use it once upon a time. But now I see many characters in Tamizh movies using the appellation "டே......................ய்" in that typical manner which shows them as militant villains!

Smt. Renuka and I did not have any common grounds especially because Satya Sai Baba was a living God for her and I hold very poor opinion about him. But I am happy that she finds me to be of some use now. Sometimes our children, grandchildren in their infancy address us as "டேய்" and we cherish it, do we not? So, let this pass.

PS: Shri tbs,

Why is it so pleasant to you to "incite" மூட்டி விடறது? I thought you are an ex-service man who only faces when it comes to a fight; does it give you credit to indulge in this sort of incitement to fight? Of course, I reckon you as at least a middle aged person; if you are very young, this is probably to be expected.

Dear Sangom,

Dude is used as a more as in a friendly gesture like how friends greet each other. It means "buddy"(good friends)
Its not like Tamil டேய்..otherwise I wouldnt have used it on you.

Anyway I meant it as a friendly gesture.

Renu
