Our Marriage Traditions

Seven steps we take during the marriage with our wife is so significant that we have to give its meaning to our younger generation.
I am giving the translated text below:
THE SEVEN STEPS

(Bride) and (Groom) seven steps and four circumambulations around
the fire symbolize their joint journey through life. While the couple
walk together, the priest, on behalf of the couple, proclaim in
Sanskrit the following:

Groom: let us walk these seven steps together

Bride: All your wealth and grains you shall place under my charge, and
Shall hereafter honour and respect me.

Groom: It shall be so. Let us take this first step towards food
and the necessities of life.

Bride: I shall guard your family and home, ever speaking sweetly to
You, patient in sorrows, joyful in comforts.

Groom: May it be so. Let us take the second step towards
Strength and vigour.

Bride: I shall ever beautify and adorn myself for you. In mind, speech,
And body I shall play only with you, ever dedicated to you.

Groom: May it be so. Let us take this third step towards prosperity
And the luxuries of life.

Bride: I shall anoint you lovingly and adorn you with fragrance,
Garlands and ornaments.

Groom: May it be so. Let us take this fourth step towards
Welfare and well-being.

Bride: In your sorrow I shall be unhappy. I shall share your joys and
Pains and I say truthfully I shall act accordingly to your wishes.

Groom: may it be so. Let us take this fifth step towards progeny.

Bride: Wherever you are, there I shall be. Beloved, you will not
Transgress me, nor shall I ever transgress you. In all religious
Observances and acts of charity I shall be with you, your companion in
Religious pursuits, in material means and in passionate desires.

Groom: May it be so. Let us take this sixth step towards six good
Seasons throughout all the years of life.

Bride: all the deities know your mind and mine. We have
Made these promises in truth.

Groom: It is so. Let us take this seventh step towards lifelong
friendship. Let us have many children. May they reach a ripe old age.

The seven steps

Dear Mr.Dilip,

Thank you so much for providing us the translation of the Sanskrit Shloka that the priest proclaims on behalf of the couple.

Iam really exited to know such a beautiful commitments and promises that the bride and groom makes while solmnizing the occasion.

I feel every bride and groom should know this during their own marriege.

A person can try to achieve the good things in life only if he/she can understand what he/she has determined to do.

I wish that we should have a mandatory marriage system when the priest need to breife the bride and goom at the end, these wonderful statments in Tamil. Not only the Seven Steps but the actual meaning of other performances as well as long as that can help couple to understant their duties, responsibilities, commitments, respect and love for each other as busband and wife by the feel of their heart.

Thank you so much for such a wonderful update.

Cheers...

RAVI

Thanks for these wonderful explanations .Is it possible to have a brief explanations on the complete ceremony starting from the beginning .thanks

Dear all,
I want to know all the rituals, included in the marriage system with all the sects. I heard even TB iyers vary with place with place. North arcot, thanjavur, tirunelveli like that. Please contribute all your place's custom (in particular during the ritual, "Pacchai padi sutharadu"). A lot of conflicts raise only during this, I think.

Regards

From my experience, I can say that most priests make the performers understand at least the main things in a ceremony. But how many people are genuinely interested? A guru will be interested only as long as a listener is interested. In present day many perfomers as well as the priests are in a hurry to finish and attend to other multifunctions. I recall with gratitude my Vaadhyaars and priests who gave me a lot of meanings and methods, the reason due to which I am now able to participate in the discussions.

Aacharayl paadamaadattam......

....paadam shishya swamedhaya.. ( In education the Guru is instrumental to teach one quarter, ........ one quarter friends, one quarter by brahmachrya, one quarter by shishya himself, )

Greeetings
