Can Jayalalithaa’s niece Deepa Jayakumar or nephew Deepak stake claim to her Poes Garden property in the absence of a will?
Information from an RTI query has revealed that there is no record of a will being left behind former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

In response to an RTI query filed by activist S Bhaskaran, the Commercial Taxes and Registration Department (CTRD) said that it did not have in its possession any such documents regarding Jayalalithaa's will.

The CTRD is in charge of recording wills.

"I am to inform that no details as requested in your petition cited is available in the Commercial Taxes and Registration Department, Secretariat, Chennai 9," Thiru C Kannan, Under Secretary to Government, Public Information Officer, wrote in his response.

High-value properties

As per the declarationJayalalithaa made during the May 2016 Assembly elections, her total assets wereworth Rs 113.73 crore. Crucially, Jayalalithaa did not name anyone in thedependent columns.

Her wealth included Rs 10.63crore worth of bank deposits.

Investments in five firms –Shri Jaya Publications, Sasi Enterprises, Kodanad Estate (which holds hundredsof acres in the pristine Nilgiris hills), Royal Valley Floritech Exports andGreen T Estate – amount to Rs 27.4 crore.

Her jewellery is valued at Rs41.63 crore and she also owns nine vehicles.

Immovable assets include Rs14.7 crore worth of agricultural land and residential and commercial buildings, including her Poes Garden residence amounting to Rs 43 crore.

Her aide Sasikala is apartner in some of the firms. Also, a number of these assets were seized aspart of proceedings in the disproportionate assets case pending before theSupreme Court.

Apart from her personalassets, the AIADMK as a party also holds large sums, estimated to be over Rs100 crore.

Jayalalithaa was a hugelypopular cinema star who acted in over 140 movies. In 1968, she was the highestpaid actress in Tamil cinema and had often said that many of her assets camefrom her personal earnings.

But between 1991 and 1996when she was the chief minister, Jayalalithaa famously declared that she wouldtake only Re 1 as salary.
