After Diwali firecrackers, air quality in major cities across the country has deteriorated, with Delhi and Mumbai recording "poor" Air Quality Indexes (AQI). Chennai's air quality has also gone down, with it deteriorating to "poor".
The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has reported that the AQI in several parts of Tamil Nadu's capital city has exceeded 250, indicating poor air quality.
In view of the situation, the government has advised people to wear masks when going outdoors and avoid strenuous activity to protect themselves from the poor air quality.

The widespread bursting of crackers on Diwali despite a Supreme Court ban aggravated the pollution problem in Delhi-NCR with people waking up to a thick haze and the air quality at several locations plunging into “severe” and “very poor” category. The visibility at many points was limited to a few hundred metres.
The authorities in the national capital are now contemplating the implementation of the odd-even vehicle rationing scheme, if the air quality index (AQI) crosses the level of 450, which is categorised as ‘severe plus’.

Seven villages in the Erode district of Tamil Nadu celebrated Diwali without bursting firecrackers to protect the avian population at the nearby bird sanctuary in Vadamugam Vellode, located just 10 kilometers from Erode.
During the breeding season, which spans from October to January, the sanctuary becomes a haven for thousands of local and migratory birds that arrive to lay and hatch their eggs.

The Delhi govt has been imposing a blanket ban for the last two consecutive years on the use and sale of all types of firecrackers to prevent the already polluted air from becoming more toxic.
NEW DELHI: The government's much-talked ''complete ban on the storage, sale, and use of all types of firecrackers'' went in tatters within hours on Diwali night. The sound of firecrackers bursting could be heard at almost all places in Delhi till midnight.
Notably, firecrackers are extensively used in India during various festivals, ceremonies, and social events, and they find a special place during Diwali.
