Chitra Thiyagarajan developed a device and technology that converts plastic waste into a fuel similar to diesel and LPG Gas. After a series of tests in a sustained three-year effort, Thiyagarajan finally perfected the device and applied for a patent

She call it as 'pyro-plant' , according her all plastics except PET bottles are put in a chamber and heated in the absence of oxygen over chromium micro band heaters to temperatures of between 350oC and 375oC. The gas generated passes into another chamber with a water coolant coils on two sides. It is then pumped into another compartment half-filled with water. The fuel floats on the surface. Non-soluble gas that passes into a condenser can be used as an LPG alternative.

Oh you guys are so adorable, you all really think these perpetual machine claims are serious and they are yet to be swooped up?

There is a medium size plant near chennai that converts waste plastic to furnace oil. There was a half an hour tv programme on this plant about 2 years ago.

" A Chennai-based company has been pioneering a first-of-its kind technique in the whole of Asia to extract crude oil from plastic waste over the past three years at a plant at Alathur. The company, M K Aromatics, which has attracted the attention of civic authorities in states including Karnataka and Kerala, is yet to find takers in Tamil Nadu. The company's efforts are towards finding a solution to reduce the plastic waste menace."

Many ideas, though technically feasible, that heve reached the pilot plant stage do not convert into final manufacture. Reasons are many - difficulties in scaling, cost of capital, assured availability raw material and financial viability. There was a brilliant idea of towing ice mountains from antartica to middle east, considered viable despite the loss due to melting in the journey.

Creating less waste is a preferable solution in the short run, which is difficult as all the packed items (food and non food) come in plastic containers.
