Mobile number portability in India

With Mobile number portability to start today, here’s how you can shift from your current service provider to a new one.

Send an SMS from your phone to 1900. Your present company will reply with a unique porting code. Use that code while filling out a detailed form for the company you want to shift to. Within 48 hours, that company will take over all your cell services. The fee charge may cost you about Rs 19.

Your cell number will be switched off for only one hour. All bills after that are paid to your new company. You’ll be stuck with them for at least 50 days before you can shift again, so choose with care. While you can shift from a GSM service to CDMA or vice versa, you cannot shift from one state to another.

I Wish to add that this Number portability is being introduced in Rohtak in Haryana today, it may take some more months (up to early 2011) for this facility to get introduced in other parts of the Country.

Wow I didn't know the process was so simple. GReat.
I think switch over charge is 15 Rs.

Idea cellular AD is entertaining. They have already started taking lead. What a campaign.

Should be a good step. As no company would like to forego its customer, services may improve further. But the process of mobile portability must be seamless.

mobile portability is a very good idea...since u can have the same number to whichever service provider u shift , saving us from printing new visiting cards ,letter pads ,and informing all our buddies abt the new number..the govt has an idea of lifting roaming also
