The celebration of Deepavali is very old. It pre-dates almost all known itihAsa and puranic times. Hence I suppose that all other historical events got tagged to it, rather than Deepavali starting with them.
Deepavali has always been a festival of sound and light (never a festival of smoke).
The first sound in the Universe had originated in a cloud of protons (more correctly varieties of them called baryons), as the first matter forms of protons and electrons were getting formed, when the photons moving here and there in that cloud were pushing them in different directions creating the first sound of Universe called 'Baryonic acoustic oscillations'. This is the praNava, the primordial sound of the Universe.
The whole Universe started with praNava and hence we start every mantra with praNava (aum).
The first light in the Universe also originated in this cloud. When the cloud of positive charged protons and negative charged electrons combined and formed the neutral atoms, the photons that were interacting with them and pushing them, left that cloud, travelling all over the Universe's spacetime and creating the first 'light' of the Universe called Cosmic Microwave Background.
When we are biased (charged one way or another) internally, our mind oscillates and we make lot of sound externally. But when we leave our 'biases' and become 'neutral', our oscillations subside and our mind space gets lit up.
