Municipal corporation elections don't always assume national importance. But the way the chief players in elections to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) are fighting it out, it seems national political discourse hinges on this very election.
The control of Delhi is important for the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for obvious reasons, as also for the Congress that ruled the capital not so long ago.

For BJP, Delhi seems to be the only exception to a wave that the party is currently enjoying. For AAP, Delhi is the key to its immediate raison d’etre, especially after its ignominious defeats in the Punjab and Goa Assembly elections.

And for the citizens reeling under life-threatening epidemics like dengue, chikungunya, swine flu, malaria, etc. at the turn of every season, it’s important who do they give the reins of the city to.

Election Date
: Sunday, 23 April

I just voted driving directly from airport to polling booth.I had gone out of station

I did not know even the names of women candidates from BJP,AAP, Congress, swaraj party contesting

I presume mine is a reserved constituency for women.

Amongst other things the winner has to tackle the garbage issue.

Delhi resembles a ghost town with all shops closed and most vehicles off the road.

It is an eerie feeling .

Driving forty plus km on near deserted roads.

Made it in thirty five minutes. Normally it is hour plus. at this time of day

Amongst other things the winner has to tackle the garbage issue.

Who stands to gain and who stands to lose.....?

Supreme Court has already rapped the AAP Government that the MLAs have responsiblity to take care of the public especially when people are dying due to lack of proper disposal of waste at the national capital.

While so, medias on the other hand report that 30% of the candidates who contest are crorepathis and 116 are accused of Henious Crimes...!!

What can be expected from them if these candidates are elected to win...?

I and well off south delhi residents gain enormously if AAP wins.

Property taxes [which is highest in south delhi] is likely to be waived if AAP wins[poll promise].

Garbage will get removed as both govt and MCD will be AAP and better coordination.

Workers of MCD will gain as they will get their salaries regularly .

But BJP are favourites due to Modi factor

One cannot forget the recent humiliating defeat of AAP at Rajouri Garden

Shunghu committee Report

Matter of Ram Jethmalai fees

Poor show in Goa

Disappoiting performance at Punjap

Failure to provide drinking water in many slums falling under its jurisdiction

Visibly corrupt system prevailing in Delhi Jal Board

High handed function of some MLAs

and many other cons..

IF BJP wins MCD polls , more turf wars between AAP and BJP

More garbage being not lifted .

Stinking future .

More cows and four legged on the roads.

Cow vigilants attacks on anyone with a beard

Bad for lovers in public spaces with no place to hide.

By the way delhi zoo and old mughal monuments serve as good meeting places if gardens become no go places for youngsters.

Whether it is a carbage free Delhi or corruption free Delhi..

It is going to be the choice of Delhiites.... they deserve..

Delhi MCD Elections: Do-or-Die Battle for Kejriwal Before 2019

AAP and Kejriwal In the Soup

The ground has been meticulously prepared to facilitate the unraveling of the AAP government. Twenty-one of its 67 MLAs face possible disqualification on the office of profit issue. The case is pending with the Election Commission which has reserved its order and could pronounce judgement any day.

Fourteen other MLAs are under investigation by Delhi Police for a variety of criminal cases and are out on bail currently. Health Minister Satyendra Jain has the CBI on his heels on corruption charges. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal himself is fighting both a civil and a criminal defamation suit filed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. Should he lose the criminal case, he is in danger of going to jail.

There are myriad other headaches for him. AAP has been ordered by the Lt Governor and the Supreme Court to pay up Rs 97 crore for unauthorised expenses on advertising.

The Shunglu committee has indicted the Kejriwal government on several counts of maladministration including illegal allotment of land. The CBI is already inquiring into four cases made out by the committee. In addition, there are charges of nepotism and questionable foreign trips against some members of his cabinet.

Delhi is all set for counting today.

Hope the'broom'will go for a clean sweep backed by its past performance and welfare measures initiated towards Delhiites.

MCD Elections Explained in Numbers: The Key Stats You Need to Know

Votes to be Counted at 35 Centres

Delhi is all set for counting day on Wednesday after the polling took place for the civic polls on Sunday. Counting of votes in the national capital for what is expected to be a three-way fight between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Aam Aadmi Party (BJP) and the Congress, will begin at 8 AM.

The verdict is likely to have political ramifications beyond Delhi's borders. The result will also determine whether the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP, which had stunned all by bagging 67 seats out of 70 in the 2015 Delhi Assembly polls, still holds sway in the national capital.

Find all the key stats and numbers that explain the MCD polls below.

Of course , BJP will get a landslide if opinion polls are to be believed.

Delhi people are sensitive.

They are looking for change again .

It is thumbs down to others.

MCD Election 2017: Arvind Kejriwal, AAP should take lessons from Assam's Prafulla Mahanta

Aam Admi Party is showing certain arrogance even in its crushing defeat in three municipal corporations of Delhi. All its leaders are sticking to a rather annoying excuse that their humiliating defeat and Bharatiya Janata Pary's stupendous victory could only be attributed to tampering of time-tested Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), for which they have coined a new term.

"EVM lahar" (EVM-manipulated wave) is their coinage of word to demean or debunk what people across sections of society call "Modi lahar" (Modi wave). But then, there are times when one should speak socially and politically appropriate words. Arvind Kejriwal and his party members, however, believe in the philosophy of being in continuous war with something or the other.

If immediately after scoring an unprecedented victory, Kejriwal was at war with his own party leaders like Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav, then he was at war with Delhi's Lieutenant-Governor, which continues till date. Then, he called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a coward and psychopath, who could even stoop so low that he could get his political rivals including top leaders eliminated. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley was projected as another villain who had to be taken on and when none of these yielded desired results to Kejriwal, he latched on a wide ball thrown by BSP chief Mayawati on declaration of UP election results to get into an imaginary war with the EVM.

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal. PTIDelhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal. PTI
Forget about learning from their mistakes, AAP has not learnt even the basic keyword in politics called "humility", even if that is meant for only public consumption. One is expected to accept popular verdict, victory or defeat, with humility.

Instead, AAP displays arrogance for it believes that no matter what wrong it commits, no matter how its supremo conducts himself and no matter how he gives a go by to governance and sets constitutional norms as Delhi chief minister, no matter how he promotes nepotism and favouritism, no matter how he spends public money on self-promotion through advertisement campaigns in all parts of the country, no matter how brazenly he defends his decision to make tax payers in Delhi pay crores of fees for Ram Jethmalani in the civil and criminal defamation case filed by Arun Jaitley, Kejriwal believes he has an infallible charisma and people would ever be obliged to vote for him and his party.

AAP's leaders are trying to tell people that MCD result is not Kejriwal's defeat but the defeat of democratic system in India, if that has any takers.

It takes vote and support for granted. Nothing else can explain this spectacular fall of AAP.

If Kejriwal and his men were to introspect, they would find that it is not the EVM but is their haughtiness, unbridled ambition and negative energy always above danger mark which is to be blamed for their present ignominy. EVM is a machine which can record vote in favour of AAP only when a voter presses button in front of its poll symbol, the jhadu (broom).

Unfortunately, Kejriwal and his core team of 'yes men' are trying to build a narrative to address to their unsuspecting workers. And that narrative is that Kejriwal's charishma is still intact and is not down in the electoral dumps because of his own deeds or misdeeds.
But they tend to conveniently forget that in democracy, the leader of a party is required to reach out with solutions while being in constant endeavour to build its mass base and organisation strength. People look at leaders who tends to provide them solutions, at least be sincere about providing solutions and delivery of public goods. As it is, their own life is full of problems. Thus, people would not go for a leader who keeps on burdening them with problems and picking off fights with all concerned.

That's where Prime Minister Narendra Modi's stock booms and Kejriwal's stock bombs.

Kejriwal and his party colleagues also tend to forget that they were the ones who in their early days loved talking of "janmat sangrah" gathering people's opinion on every issue. The party no longer talks about it. It could otherwise have taken result of Rajouri Garden assembly seat bypoll, where it finished a poor third and forfeited its security deposit, as an indicator of the kind of popular anger that was there against them and then have taken corrective measures. Punjab and Goa Assembly poll results were equally disappointing.

Municipal Corporations of Delhi (MCD) elections should have been a cake walk for AAP, given the fact only two years ago, it had won 67 out of 70 seats in Delhi. It was a vote for hope, trust and faith in a man who pitched himself as an anti-corruption crusader and governance messiah.

But instead of focusing on the delivery of goods in Delhi and fulfilling promises made to people in Delhi, Kejriwal went out to conquer the nation — Punjab, Goa, Gujarat and so on. In the end, he took only two years not just to lose election but also his credibility, face and support as a leader.

Kejriwal should now be reading about the rise and fall of Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and his party called Asom Gana Parishad. He can take some lessons from there.

Local issues did not count in this election.

It was Modi vs kejriwal.

Modis image as a person who delivers is intact.

Kejriwal took a beating as he was perceived as deserting delhi to campaigning in punjab, goa and gujarat.Even his deputy was not available at times. He consistently

only fought with LG and blamed him for all that was wrong. His party MLA were useless and got caught on many police cases. He lost yogendra yadav , the man with the

ideology and prashant bhushan who went off with many party men. He got left only with the bania crowd and hangers on.

Slum and muslim votes got split between congress and AAP. Urban middle class shifted enmasse to BJP.Cong plus AAP collected about 50% about half going to either of

them. BJP collected 42 to43%. If cong plus AAP had been together , they would have easily won.

AAP did good work . BJP had messed up MCD and was very corrupt. Yet they swept polls because of Modi factor.

BJP is reported to be ahead by leaps and bounds…

It seems that the saffron Party has not only going to win the election but has in fact increased its tally.

Going by these results, one can assume that the
AAP and its leaders have lost the faith and trust of the Delhi voters.

In a recent election at Rajouri Garden, AAP candidate met with a humiliating defeat and has also lost his deposit.

It may be evident that AK instead of taking opportunity to serve the general public by initiating various welfare measures, was busy in dreaming of capturing power in Punjab and Goa.

He cannot play victim game any more.

He can lament about tampering the EVM and no one is going to care about it.

A much deserving lesson for AK to learn.

[h=1]MCD Election Results 2017: Arvind Kejriwal's penchant for cheap populism, cronyism led to downfall of AAP[/h]
Kejriwal has walked too far away from the promise of an Indian spring he had inspired. From sweeping the Delhi Assembly polls in 2015 to being swept away in election to the municipalities, Kejriwal has traversed a trajectory that has seen many before him turning into zeroes from heroes.

Where did Kejriwal go wrong? For answers, let us rewind to one of his biggest and boldest decisions, the controversial but decisive step to ration roads on odd-even days.

Back then, almost all of Delhi, in spite of hardships, supported his decision. When Opposition parties opposed the move, citizen groups sprang to Kejriwal's side, turning the move into a massive success, if not in terms of desired results at least in terms of expectations.

What did it show? One, Kejriwal still had the moral leadership of Delhi and people were willing to make sacrifices because they believed in his ideas and ideals. Two, he was seen as a disruptive force ready to think out of the box and take bold decisions, even in the face of heavy opposition. Three, he had the support of the middle class, the youth and Delhi's work force that gamely accepted his initiative.

From the horse’s mouth…..

Yes we made mistakes’ admits Kejriwal in introspection after MCD drubbing.

'The need is action, not excuses' the Delhi CM said on Saturday.

Following the mass exodus and reports of in-fighting within the party, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convener Arvind Kejriwal struck a note on Saturday by admitting that the party made some crucial mistakes which led to their heavy defeat in the Delhi civic polls.

Accepting his mistakes, Kejriwal asserted that it's time to get back to work.

— Arvind Kejriwal (@ArvindKejriwal) April 29, 2017

This admission comes after Kejriwal's defiance post the exit polls predicted a BJP sweep in the civic polls. He had then said that he would launch a "movement" if the exit poll results came out to be true.

Even on Wednesday afternoon, two of Kejriwal's close aides blamed EVMs for the party's defeat. One of them, labour minister Gopal Rai said that the BJP had won because of an "EVM wave", not because of a "Modi wave".

Meanwhile, taking a dig at the AAP, following party member Kumar Vishwas's doubts over Kejriwal, the BJP said, it looks like a civil war going on within the party.
