This is a beautiful movie about the platonic friendship between an old woman and a young man, who helps her see the world she missed after the death of her husband. Jayaram and Sheela have put up very memorable performances. Very sad that we do not get such movies in Tamil.

"Manassinakkare" did not appear to me as depicting Sheela as an ignorant old woman in the beginning, waking up to the ways of the world at last. Sheela comes out as the wife (widow) of an entirely self-made couple who rose from nothing to be wealthy by their sheer hard work and the grace of a bountiful earth. This made her live as a wealthy widow with all its trappings but be the very same old, poor agricultural labourer at heart.
