[h=1]Man kills daughter for inter-caste marriage[/h]Bhubaneswar: A teenaged girl was strangulated to death allegedly by her father for marrying a boy from a different caste in Balangir district. The girl's plight did not end with her death.

The Government Railway Police (GRP), after recovering the body, handed it over to the local civic body, which in turn threw it in a dumping yard.

Some local volunteers retrieved the girl's body from the jaws of stray dogs and performed the last rites on Friday, four days after she was murdered.

The deceased has been identified as Geeta Tanla, 17 of Khunt Samalei village under Patnagarh police limits. She had married Narendra Tandi of the same village. "The accused, Kailash Tanla, was on the run after strangulating his daughter near Balangir railway station. We have registered a case on the basis of complaint lodged by the deceased's grandmother," said GRP inspector K N Thelko.

Police said the girl fell in love with a boy hailing from other caste while working at a brick kiln in Vijayawada two years ago. Both the families didn't approve of their relationship. However, the duo tied the knot going against their families. The boy then convinced his family members and took Geeta home. After some days, he ousted her. Helpless, the girl returned to her parent's house. Seeing Geeta, her angry father threatened to kill her.

Sources said Geeta's grandmother Nen stood by her and went to Patnagarh police station, where police advised her to hide her pregnant grandchild for sometime. "Geeta stayed some days with her at an undisclosed location, but her father came to know about it and persuaded them to return. On the way to their village, Kailash strangulated her and fled. We have launched a manhunt to nab him," said Thelko.

Despite repeated attempts, the local civic body authorities couldn't be contacted.

"The municipality dumper brought the body and dumped it. It is distressing that the civic authorities dumped a body without funeral," said Lalit Nayak, the social worker, who took initiative of cremating the body.
