Swamy Says Communists, USSR Pushed Indira Gandhi
BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, who was nominated to Rajya Sabha on Friday, has said that there is a need to make public the Operation Bluestar files so that people know the whole truth.Speaking here on Saturday, he alleged that erstwhile Union of Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR) was pressing then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on the advice of Indian communists. “The real issue was that the Soviets were keen on it because of pressure of Indian communist leaders like Harkishan Singh Surjeet, who felt that revival of Sikhism in Punjab would mean doom for communism here,“ he said.He was talking to the media after addressing students of Lovely Professional University (LPU).
“It was a foolish step which was done without proper thinking,“ he said about the Army entering the Golden Temple complex in June 1984. Earlier, during the question-answer session with students, Swamy said, “I opposed it (the Army operation) very strongly. Most of the Hindus were annoyed with me due to this and I lost an election but I did not bother.Slowly, everyone has realized that it was a mistake.“
He added, “Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale was a religious preacher. What I saw and what I knew personally, and very clearly, was that he was speaking out against narcotics and on other social issues in Punjab. He was young, only 35, and his speeches were fiery. Once Soviet ambassador to India also asked me why I was supporting Bhindranwale. I told that I was not supporting him but you can't call him a terrorist as he was daily holding a press conference at the Akal Takht. Will a terrorist hold a press conference at his place daily? I asked back.“
“Perceptions are created, perspectives are changed, things and opinions can be managed. Bluestar was also Indira Gandhi's compulsion as she was facing pressure from USSR and she could not refuse to listen to them. The then president Giani Zail Singh also asked me to explain to Indira that sending the Army into to complex would be a big blunder. I spoke to her but USSR was behind it. Surjeet was also pressurizing a lot. I also felt that if Sikhs were weakened our fighting capacity would be weakened,“ Swamy added.
