Legendary Tamil actress Manorama is no more!

Legendary Tamil actress Manorama died of multiple organ failure in Chennai on Saturday. She was 78. Manorama is survived by her son and singer-actor Boopathy. Manorama was lovingly called Aachi by her admirers. The Tamil actress appeared in more than 1,000 films and holds the record of having acted with 5 chief ministers of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

She has acted in Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu films. In of one of her last interviews, Manorama said she has no regrets at all and feels blessed to have done all she did in her life and career.


"Even in my next birth, I want to be born as Manorama again. I want this same life, and same people around me. Most of all, I want my mom with me again." Manorama’s body will be kept for public viewing at her house in Chennai from 1.30 pm on October 11. Read a detailed report in The Hindu newspaperhere.

Manorama played the female lead in the plays written, directed and acted in by former Tamil Nadu chief minister CN Annadurai besides appearing in plays with another chief minister M Karunanidhi.
Manorama also acted in Telugu films with NT Rama Rao, who went on to become chief minister of the erstwhile undivided Andhra Pradesh.Born Gopishantha to Kasi Kilakudaiyar and Ramamirtham at Mannargudi in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, she started her acting career on stage at age 12. She was rechristened Manorama by drama director Thiruvengadam and harmonist Thiyagarajan and migrated from dramas to the silver screen with the role of a heroine in the 1958 Tamil film 'Maalayitta Mangai’.

Her performance in the 1968 Tamil movie 'Thillana Mohanambal' is considered a milestone in her career. She held her own against stalwarts Sivaji Ganesan and Padmini in the film.

Her on-screen pairing with comedian Nagesh, ‘Cho' Ramaswamy and later with Thengai Srinivasan in the late 70s and 80s was very popular with the masses.

She was awarded the Padma Shri in 2002 and also won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for ‘Pudhiya Pathai' in 1989.

She has acted in more than 1000 films which is a Guinness world record..Cho used to tell that Manorama is the female Sivaji Ganesan! 5 முதல்வர்களுடன் நடித்த நகைச்சுவை அரசியின் வாழ்க்கை வரலாறு!


தமிழ் திரையுலகினராலும், ரசிகர்களாலும் அன்போடு "ஆச்சி' என்று அழைக்கப்பட்ட நடிகை மனோரமா ஆயிரம் படங்களுக்கு மேல் நடித்த பெருமை பெற்றவர். மூன்று தலைமுறை நடிகர்களுடன் நடித்தவர். தமிழ் சினிமாவில் இவர் நடிக்காத கேரக்டேரே கிடையாது.

திருவாரூர் மாவட்டம் மன்னார்குடியில் 1937, மே 26 ஆம் தேதி காசி குலோகுடையார் - ராமாமிதம் தம்பதிக்கு மகளாக மனோரமா பிறந்தார். இயற்பெயர் கோவிந்தம்மாள் . குடும்பத்தில் வறுமை சூழல்.இதனால் காரைக்குடி அருகேயுள்ள பள்ளத்தூருக்கு வந்து சேர்ந்தது மனோரமா குடும்பம். யார் மகன்? என்ற நாடகத்தில் மனோரமா நடிக்கும் போது அவரது வயது வெறும் 12 .

நாடக இயக்குநர் திருவேங்கடம்தான் இவருக்கு "மனோரமா' என பெயர் சூட்டினார். முன்னாள் முதல்வர் அண்ணாதுரை எழுதிய "வேலைக்காரி' உள்ளிட்ட சில நாடகங்களில் அவருடன் மனோரமா நடித்துள்ளார். கருணாநிதி எழுதிய "உதயசூரியன்' நாடகத்தில் கருணாநிதி கதாநாயகனாகவும் நடிக்க மனோரமா கதாநாயகியாகவும் நடித்திருக்கிறார்.

தொடர்ந்து 1958ல் "மாலையிட்ட மங்கை' என்ற படத்தின் மூலம் சினிமாவுக்குள் நுழைந்தார். கவிஞர் கண்ணதாசன்தான் இவரை சினிமாவுக்கு அழைத்து வந்தார். முதல் படமே காமெடி ரோலில் கலக்கினார். அந்த காலக்கட்டத்தில் நகைச்சுவை நடிகர் நாகேசுடன் மனோரமா தோன்றினார் தியேட்டரை சிரிப்பலையில் மூழ்கி கிடக்கும்.

தமிழக முன்னாள் முதல்வர்கள் அண்ணாதுரை, கருணாநிதி இருவரும் நாடக மேடைகளில் மனோரமாவுடன் நடித்திருக்கிறார்கள். தவிர ஜெயலலிதா மற்றும் எம்.ஜி.ஆர், ஆகியோருடனும், என். டி. ராமாராவுடன் தெலுங்கு படங்களில் என 5 முதல்வர்களுடன் நடித்திருக்கிறார். ஆயிரத்திற்கு மேற்பட்ட நாடகங்களில் மனோரமா நடித்துள்ளார்.

தமிழ், மலையாளம், கன்னடம், தெலுங்கு, ஹிந்தி மற்றும் சிங்களம் என ஆறு மொழி படங்களில் நடித்துள்ளார். எத்தனை பக்கம் வசனமென்றாலும் காட்சிக்கு ஏற்றவாறு பேசி அசத்தி விடும் தனித்திறமை மனோராமாவுக்கு உண்டு.

தில்லானா மோகனம்பாள் படத்தில் சிவாஜி கணேசன், பத்மினி ஆகியோருடன் மனோரமா நடித்திருப்பார். இப்படத்தில் "ஜில் ஜில் ரமாமணி' என்ற கேரக்டர் அந்த காலத்திலேயே மிக பிரபலமாக இருந்தது.

"கண் திறந்தது' படக் கதாநாயகன் எஸ்.எம்.ராமாநாதனை மனோராமா திருமணம் செய்து கொண்டார். இவர்களுக்கு பூபதி என்ற மகன் உள்ளார். கடைசியாக மனோரமா நடித்த படம் பொன்னர் சங்கர் ஆகும்.100 க்கு மேற்பட்ட பின்னணி பாடல்களையும் மனோரமா பாடியுள்ளார்.

1989ம் ஆண்டு "புதிய பாதை' என்ற படத்தில் நடித்தற்காக, "சிறந்த துணை நடிகைக்கான' தேசிய விருது மனோரமாவுக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டது. 2002ம் ஆண்டு மத்திய அரசின் உயரிய விருதுகளுள் ஒன்றான "பத்ம ஸ்ரீ' விருதை மனோரமா பெற்றார்.
இவரது நடிப்பை அங்கீகரிக்கும் வகையில் கலிபோர்னியா பல்கலைக்கழகம் இவருக்கு கவுரவ டாக்டர்' பட்டம் வழங்கியது. ஆயிரம் படத்திற்கு மேல் நடித்ததற்காக கின்னஸ் புத்தகத்திலும் நடிகை மனோரமா இடம் பெற்றுள்ளார்.

தமிழ் சினிமாவையும் ஆச்சியையும் பிரித்து பார்த்து விட முடியாது. அவர் நடிக்காத கேரக்டர் இல்லை. பேசாத வசனம் இல்லை. அவரது நகைச்சுவையை பார்த்து சிரிக்காத மனிதர்களும் இல்லை. தமிழ் மக்கள் அத்தனை பேரையும் வயிறு வலிக்க சிரிக்க வைத்த, மனோரமாவின் சொந்த வாழ்க்கை சோகம் நிறைந்ததாகவேத்தான் இருந்தது.

பள்ளி கூடம் படிக்கும் காலத்தில் இருந்தே நாடகம் நடிக்கத் தொடங்கிய மனோரமா, ஆரம்ப காலத்தில் வாங்கிய சம்பளம் 10 ரூபாய். பின்னர் அவர் ஆயிரக்கணக்கில் சம்பளம் வங்கிய நாடக நடிகையாக இருந்த காலத்தில், தன்னுடன் நடித்த எஸ்.எம். ராமநாதனை திருமணம் செய்தார். திருச்செந்தூர் கோயிலில் வைத்து இருவருக்கும் திருமணம் நடந்தது. மனோரமாவுக்காக சாட்சி கையெழுத்து போட்டவர், இவர் அண்ணாக கருதிய சக நடிகரான கிருஷ்ண மூர்த்தி என்பவர்.

1964ஆம் ஆண்டு இவர்கள் திருமணம் நடைபெற்றது. அதற்கு பின்,குழந்தை பெற்றுக்கொள்ள சொந்த ஊரான பள்ளத்தூருக்கு மனோரமா சென்றார். குழந்தையும் பிறந்தது. அந்த குழந்தைக்கு பூபதி என்ற பெயர் சூட்டப்பட்டது. குழந்தை பிறந்த பின் 16 நாள் கழித்து மனோராமாவின் கணவர் எஸ்.எம். ராமநாதன் வந்து பார்த்து சென்றார். அதற்கு பின், அவர் மனோரமாவையும் குழந்தையையும் பார்க்கவே வரவில்லை.

தொடர்ந்து மனோரமா சினிமாவில் நடிக்க ஆரம்பித்த சமயத்தில் அவருக்கு மற்றொரு அதிர்ச்சி காத்திருந்தது. இவரிடம் இருந்து ஒதுங்கத் தொடங்கிய கணவர், விவாகரத்து கேட்டு நோட்டீஸ் அனுப்பியிருந்தார். மனோரமா எந்த நிர்பந்தமும் அளிக்கவில்லை. தன்னை அவருக்கு பிடிக்கவில்லை போலும் என்று கருதி 1966ஆம் ஆண்டு விவகாரத்து பெற்று பிரிந்து விட்டார்.

இதில் இன்னொரு விஷயம் என்னவென்றால், மனோரமாவை விவாகரத்து செய்து விட்டு எஸ்.எம். ராமநாதன் இன்னொருவரை திருமணம் செய்து கொண்டார். மனோராமாவின் திருமணத்துக்கு சாட்சி கையெழுத்து போட்ட சக நடிகர் கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தியின் தங்கையைதான் எஸ்.எம். ராமநாதன் 2வதாக திருமணம் செய்தார். ஆனால் இந்த தம்பதிக்கு குழந்தை இல்லை.

சொந்த வாழ்க்கையில் ஏற்பட்ட தோல்விக்கு பிறகு நடிப்பு நடிப்பு என்று சினிமாவையே தனது வாழ்க்கையாக தேர்வு செய்து கொண்டார் மனோரமா. கோடி கோடியாகவும் சம்பாதித்தார்.

அவரது கணவர் எஸ்.எம். ராமநாதன் இறந்த போது, நடிகை மனோரமாவுக்கு தகவல் கொடுத்தனர். கணவரோட இறப்புக்கு போகக் கூடாது என்று மனோரமாவின் தாய் தடுத்து பார்த்தார். ஆனால் அதனை மனோரமா ஏற்றுக் கொள்ளவில்லை. இறுதிச்சடங்குக்கு தனது மகன் பூபதியுடன் சென்று அவருக்கு கொள்ளி போடவும் வைத்தார்.

இத்தகைய பெருந்தன்மையான குணங்களால்தான் தமிழகத்தின் ஆச்சியாக மனோரமா உயர்ந்து நிற்கிறார்.

I read before that when Manorama was born her father was not happy of having a girl child and did not want her ..so her mother left her father and worked hard as a domestic helper to bring her up.

Then when Manorama got married and she gave birth to a son..the rumour goes that her son's horoscope was not favorable for her husband and her husband did not want the son..so she left her husband and brought up her son on her own by working hard in films.

Manorama was already in film industry before she got married..her husband himself was the manager of her drama troupe.

I would not want to agree that having a troubled marriage is a blessing in disguise otherwise we would not have had such a versatile actress..that seems as if her personal happiness did not matter as long she kept her fans happy on screen.

I would not want someone to lead an unhappy life just to keep me happy on screen.Life is much more than that.
