Violin Virtuoso Lalgudi G. Jayaraman passed away today at Chennai. He was 82 and survived by his wife Smt Rajalakshmi and son Krishnan and daughter Vijayalakshmi. Both his son and daughter are famous violinists. He started playing at the tender age of 12, and has accompanied as violinist to almost all the great Carnatic singers of his time. He set up his unique style in playing violin which is known as "Lalgudi Bani" and composed Varnams, Krithis and Thillanas which are popular in Carnatic Music. He has travelled extensively and received numerous awards. Impressed by Lalgudi's technique the great Violinist Yehudi Menuhin presented a violin to him. He composed lyrics and set music for the operatic ballet "Jaya Jaya Devi".

In passing away of "Lalgudi Mama", I have lost a family friend, an irreparable loss indeed.
My respects to this great man and heartfelt condolences to his family..

Brahmanyan,
Bangalore.

Truly a great man and a great artist :hail:

While M.S.G. was popular for his racy style of playing and

T.N K was popular for his lingering melody

Lalgudi combined both these features in his unique style.

His novel attempt of Veena-Venu-Violin was a runaway success.

He was the rare combination of the classic and the novel styles in violin.

We should thank him for leaving behind a son and a daughter as great as him

to continue to spread carnatic classical music across the globe.

May his soul rest in peace in heaven's bowl.

Dear Sri Brahmanyan Sir,

Since you seem to know him as a family friend, please post your memories of him.

Yes, India has lost a great human being for sure. He was a Karma Yogi, I think, in it's purest definition.

Regards,
KRS

Here is a tribute to Sri. Lalgudi with four nice songs he played.

'NAdhalOludai' in KalyANavasantham and 'TheerAdha viLaiyAttup piLLai' set to ragamAlika

are given a new dimension by him. The expression given for 'kaLLAl maynguvadhu pOlE'
which appears at 19m 20s needs a special mention. Only he can do it!! :yo:
