Kashmir, Karnataka, Tripura, Gujarat – everywhere BJP motormouths continue to defy PM

Trying to put a lid on motormouths repeatedly embarrassing BJP, last Sunday Prime Minister Narendra Modi told them to put a lid on it. He said stop giving “masala to the media”. He advised restraint – because otherwise “issues get altered, the nation suffers, so does the party”. But the advice seems to have fallen on deaf ears.

Over in J&K where the Kathua rape has triggered a major cabinet reshuffle, the newly inducted deputy chief minister of the party, Kavinder Gupta, has started on totally the wrong foot by calling the heinous crime “chhoti si baat” (minor issue).

In Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani has compared mythological sage Narad with internet giant Google as a source of information from across the world – a comment that coming on top of earlier comments by Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb and Union minister Satyapal Singh, reinforces the sense that too many BJP leaders are disinclined to build the much-needed scientific temper in today’s India.

Other favorite pastimes of the motormouths are being misogynist and hurting minority sensibilities. In Karnataka the latest from serial offender and Union minister Anantkumar Hegde has the Jain community protesting.

Some of the outlandish statements must be punished in some way, otherwise the impression will grow that for BJP the fringe and the mainstream are two sides of the same coin. As PM Modi said this hurts both the party and the nation.

It seems Modi-Shah have lost control of the BJP.
