Kanchi Kamakshi Amman Brahmotsavam

There is fair misconception or mis use of the word , Brahmotsavam ( ப்ரஹ்மோஸ்தவம்) and its wrong application to other deities annual festivals barring Vaishnava Temples.

Traditionally, the word Brahmostavam [ப்ரஹ்மோஸ்தவம்,], referred to the 10 day Annual Festival at Kanchi Devaperumal Sannidhi starting on month of Tamil month of Vaikasi (வைகாசி) on the constellation of Chitra nakshatra and ending on Shravan with theerthavari. As you would heard and if you arent aware, Lord Devaperumal of Kanchi, emerged from the AgniJwala of Brahma's yagna, on top of Hastigiri mound, hence he bears the marks on His thirumugam.

Brahma prostrates before Lord Devaperumal and as a token of gratitude for revealing Himself, promises to hold a 10 festival for the Lord. Thus the 10 day Annual festival was born and it was called as "Brahmostavam /Brahmostava /வைகாசி ப்ரஹ்மோஸ்தவம்" since it was started by Brahma himself.

Thus the 10 day festival of Brahmostavam /Brahmostava /ப்ரஹ்மோஸ்தவம், was subsequently adopted by all other SriVaishanava Temples and started calling their annual festivities under the same label. You may have also noticed that there is Brahma ratha/ப்ரஹ்ம ரதம், Brahma's Chariot, being pulled at Tirumala during its Annual festival. This denotes that Brahma sits on this chariot and supervises the entire festivities at Tirumala.

However, in the recent years, its is unfortunate to say and note, that this label of Brahmostavam /Brahmostava /ப்ரஹ்மோஸ்தவம் has been mis-construed and mis-adopted by Saivaite temples including Siva temples and their parivara devatas such as Murugan, Ganesha and even Mariamman temples as well. These temples initially had called their own annual festivals as "Thiruvizhas/திருவிழா"only and without knowing the history of where and how the originated, everybody calls it Brahmostavam.

It is be reminded that the word belongs only to the Annual festivals of all Srivaishnava temples only and thus is incorrect to use it for other devatas for their yearly festivals. Let understand this and avoid misusing such words.

I hope that admin will understand the context and not blindly label every other festival as Brahmostavam!!
