If you are a diabetic, you have to be very careful about what to eat and what not to throughout the year. You might be excited for monsoon as it has given relief from the rising temperature. But during the rainy season the spread of infections and bacterial contaminations are generally on the rise . A diabetic patient should also choose the right food during monsoon to maintain blood sugar levels.
Jamun is one such seasonal fruit which is beneficial for controlling blood sugar levels. During monsoon, a diabetic can enjoy the great taste of jamuns with its various benefits for diabetic patients. A person suffering from diabetes can add jamuns to his or her daily diet. Apart from adding jamuns to your diet, you should also avoid eating outside to reduce your contact with possible infections.
The Jamun tree starts flowering in March-April. The fragrant flowers of Jamun are small, nearly 5 millimetres in diameter. This is followed by the fruit which appears in May-June and resembles a large berry. The berry is oblong and ovoid. It is green when just appearing, pink when as it matures, and shining crimson black when fully ripe. Another variety comes in white and some people say that it can be used as a medicine. Jamun fruit is a mixture of sweet, slightly sub acid spicy flavour that stands out even after eaten since it turns the tongue into purple color. The fruit is universally accepted to be very good for medicinal purposes, especially diabetics.

It is one of my favourite fruits. What attracts me to it, is its tangy sweetness

Five health benefits of jamuns:
  1. Jamuns are low on calories, which makes them the perfect healthy snack. They also aid digestion and promote natural bowel movement.
  2. Jamun juice has bioactive phytochemicals that minimise the risk of liver disease and cancer.
  3. They are also known to be effective in treatment of diabetes. Extracts of bark, leaves and seeds are used in combination with herbs to reduce levels of glycosuria and blood sugar.
  4. Jamun juice acts as a natural astringent and is used as a mouthwash, as it eliminates bad breath.
  5. The pulp of this fruit is used in the treatment of gingivitis (bleeding gums).

good. thanks. unfortunately being a natural product subject to qualilty changes of soil, weather conditions & age of the tree the active principle contents which aids the benefits referred vary in the fruits /bark/leaves from season to season . over all the effects are felt/ perceived though not able to be quantified for uniformity. Like mango, amla or any edible fruits the inherent benefits are there

Powder of Jamun seeds also has antidiabetic property. Dr. Sundaram points to some problems, however this should not prevent anybody from trying it. Diabetes is a big problem in India. People have to understand how to control it. Food restriction and exercise are important aspects to manage this metabolic disorder. Stress(which is very common in Indian life) also is a contributory factor.
