Is there a natural hierarchy of life?

No sane person would allow a rodent or pest infestation in there homes because they value the lives of the creatures, nor would they refuse life-saving antibiotics that would *kill* the organism living in their body.

People kill the pests and parasites because we place more value on human life.
Is the life of rich more valuable than that of poor?
Is human life more valuable than the animal life? Animals do get eaten.
Is animal life more valuable than fungus and plant life? The plants do get eaten by animals?
But sometimes plants eat animals, too.

Sri Prasad-

One life form needs another to survive. This is a law - law of nature
Organisms and animals are not higher or lower life forms - it is biblical concept that the good lord has created all these for man's enjoyment.

A virus like cholera also 'eats' humans (An interpretation of a story in Yoga Vasishtm by some one (dont have the reference) even proposes that it is a micro-size Rakshasi in the story that is Cholera virus that is given this boon to consume humans and other life forms)

Animals, plants and organisms behave according to their programmed nature (read as bound by natural laws) - some eat plants, others eat animals/worms etc
Even a cow which is considered gentle if it charges at a small baby due to a disorder will not have remorse - it is incapable of that feeling to the extent we can observe. Its action is programmed.

Humans on the other hand are uniquely endowed with the power of free will (and associated with concept of Karma for the 'doer' of actions).
They can sense pain in self and others. They can choose to lead a life that does least harm, which is to practice Ahimsa (as explained in Chapter 13 of B.Gita as a value). Plus plants do not run away, they live while offering vegetables, and humans cannot sense pain of a organism.

However many choose to hurt others knowingly, eat animals for own pleasure and this is done not in a programmed manner but out of free will which is a unique aspect of human beings. Therefore they learn to create suffering in others and also suffer beyond just bodily injuries.

There is no hierarchy in nature but there is hierarchy in terms of specific attributes which depends on which attribute one chooses. If it is weight elephant may be at the top of the list.

If I were to choose hierarchy based on having abilities to create most harm or least harm to other beings I would say that both the worst life form and best life form would be human beings.

I fully agree with what TKS ji wrote.It makes perfect sense.We are all dependent and interdependent on each other starting from the single cell Amoeba to the Blue Whale.

Hinduism stresses upon the importance of the human intellect but that does not give us humans to have A view To a Kill and neither a Licence to Kill.

It's only Non Hindu religions who feel man only lives once and animals were made for him to be subservient to him.

Try telling a lion that we man are superior to it....the lion will just rip you apart.
We attack wild life armed with weapons.A true hero should fight with a beast with bare hands.
So that only goes to show the physical limitations of man and not to mess with animals and nature.

For the unsatisfied human mind the World is Not Enough.They believe in Live and Let Die.

The Hindu concept of life and nature drills into our head that the world is not For Your Eyes Only but to make us realize that even though we might Die Another Day but in reality Tomorrow Never Dies.

Instead of going on destructive mode to bash the Living Daylights out of every creature or plant possible we should adopt a life style that inflicts the least harm to nature,mankind and mother earth.

Life is just not a gamble to waste away in any Casino Royale.
Religious tenets and principles do give us clear guidelines to lead life in the least harmful way and confers upon us a Quantum of Solace.

After all even if we are 007 James Bond we should not forget that God is present in the minutest to the largest ( Anor aneeyan and Mahato Maheeyan)

namaste everyone.

Going by the creation account in shrImad bhAgavatam, there certainly is a hierarchy--at least in the chronological sense--in the creations of matter and life forms on earth by BrahmAdeva:

• Among insentient and sentient life, the usual view of bottom-up hierarchy is: mineral kingdom, vegetable kingdom, animal kingdom and human kingdom.

shrImad bhAgavatam in verses 3.10.15-29 gives an account of nine kinds of creations on earth, of which six are done by ViShNu and the remaining three by BrahmA:

1. The first creation is of the mahat-tattva. In the first creation the modes of nature--guNa-vaiShamyam mix and give rise to false ego--ahamaH.

2. False ego or identification of the body, along with the material ingredients--dravya, material knowledge--jnAna and material activities--kriyA arise (working senses and knowledge acquiring senses).

3. Creation of matter--bhUta-sargaH is the third. The sense perceptions--tanmAtras are created and from these the material elements are generated.
01. sound - sky
02. touch - air
03. sight - fire
04. taste - water
05. smell - earth

4. The creation of knowledge-acquiring and working capacity.

5. In the fifth creation--vaikAriko deva-sargaH, controlling deities become manifest by the interaction of the mode of goodness.

6. The sixth creation is the ignorant darkness--tamasaH of the living entity, by which the master acts as a fool.

Now starts the three kinds of creations by BrahmA:

7. The seventh creation is that of the immovable entities--tasthuShAM, which are of six kinds: vanaspati--the fruit trees without flowers, oShadhi--trees and plants which exist until the fruit is ripe, lathA--creepers, tvaksArAH--pipe plants, viruddha--creepers which have no support, and drumAH--trees with flowers and fruits.

All the immovable trees and plants seek their subsistence upwards--utsrosaH. They are almost unconscious--tamaH-prAyaH but have feelings of pain within--antaH-sparshAH. They are manifested in variegatedness--visheShiNaH.

8. The eighth creation is that of the lower species of life--tirashchAm, and they are of different varieties, numbering twenty-eight--aShTAvimsat. They are all extensively foolish and ignorant--avido-bhUritamaso. They know their desirables by smell--ghrANa-jnAH, but are unable to remember anything within the heart--hRudi-avedinaH.

• The lower animals the cow, goat, buffalo, krishna (black) stag, hog, gavaya animal, deer, lamb and camel all have two hooves--dvi-shaphAH.

• The horse, mule, kharah or ass, gaura (white deer), sharabha and wild cow all have only one hoof--eka-shaphAH.

• The dog, jackal, tiger, fox, cat, rabbit, sajaaru (porcupine variety), lion, monkey, elephant, tortoise, alligator, gosaapa (iguana), etc., all have five nails--pancha-nakhAn in their claws.

• The heron, vulture, crane, hawk, bhaasa (a kind of vulture), bhallooka, peacock, swan, saarasa (Indian crane), cakravaaka, crow, owl and others are the birds--khagAH.

• The animals are typically tiryach--growing transversely, in nature, with lateral rather than upright backbone.

9. The creation of the human beings, who are of one species only and who stock their eatables in the belly, is the ninth in the rotation. In the human race, the mode of passion is very prominent. Humans are always busy in the midst of miserable life, but they think themselves happy in all respects.

The human beings--nRuNAm differ from all other life forms on earth as

• they are of a single species only;
• the food they eat passes downwards--Arvak-srotas;
• their prominent nature is rajaH--mode of passion;
• they are karma-parAH--interested in working;
• they think--mAninaH (and have their own opinions) about happiness and sorrow.

Thus, it seems to me, that there is a definite hierarchy in the creation of insentient and sentient life-forms on earth, and that a similar hierarchy is prevalent in the creation of entities of the subtle worlds. However, this does not mean that one species of life can rule over the other for its own selfish requirements--although it happens in practice, with humans trying to rule over all other kingdoms of life. Such domination would reduce when humans, who are the only species endowed with free will, use it for the realization of Atman as the common denominator of all life forms, both sentient and insentient.

Greetings.

Nice to see opinions from learned persons. There may not be a 'natural hierarchy' of life.

But I think, there is a 'man made hierarchy' of life on most cities. Of Course, such hierarchy may not be applicable to all over the world though.

As far as I can observe, Dog is the most superior life form in the cities. ( of course, not all the dogs are blessed with that; not all the human beings are equal either... considering the differences between the rich and the poor).

Humans pretty much control all the animals in the cities ( including rats and mice etc). Most affluent persons amoung human beings are the rich.

Often times I observe these affluent persons are lead by dogs on the road. Often times, I see these persons also carry the dog. The dog craps where ever it wishes and waits; this person lead by the dog dutifully collects it in a bag and carries that with him/her. I don't know, I seriously think, dogs are the most superior life form in the man made hierarchy.

Cheers!

Sowbagyavathy Renuka, Greetings.

Nice! Nicely Written with Gold Fingers! You seem to have a view to a kill with your arguments. Tomorrow never dies for the likes of you.

Cheers!

No doubt there is a natural hierarchy of life. Normally, we say that there is an order
for every action. Living as per natural hierarchy does not apply always following strictly
the rigid rules. Sun rises and Sun sets, Winter becomes Spring and Spring becomes Summer.
This may form part of that. Sometimes, we feel happy with great pleasure or joy and the
next moment we are in a sorrow. While this cycle is constant, we may perhaps have to
take into account the action and reaction as only temporary nature.
