Is a corporate job right for a Brahmin?

Achyuta

Hello all,

Nowadays one of the only ways to earn money is to get a job. (Yes, granted there's the business aspect but a job is more risk-free relatively and certain of monthly income).

Manu scriptures state that a Brahmin must not sustain his living by service (or a dog's mode of life).
Doesn't this apply to the corporate sector?
One can lead a hermit mode of life with daily rituals, but scriptures say that being a father is more worthy than asceticism. But marriage requires money and stable money only seems to come from a job. And corporates are known for their soul-sucking atmosphere and it certainly seems like a dog's mode of life irrespective of the money.
In my opinion I honestly don't think it's right for a Brahmin to work for anyone for money ; but is that the sacrifice one must make in current times to sustain a marriage or should one pursue riskier options to preserve his Dharma?
It seems getting a job nowadays is seen as a great achievement and as long as one performs daily rituals and other religious/spiritual duties, everything seems to be justified.
Any thoughts?

No, adharma can never be justified. I am not saying going to a job by itself is adharmic. But the atmosphere in which one has to do a job is very corrupt. Anyone will yield to that pressure. The workable solution is there has to be a mass change or at least a group change.

Do a job which is an honest profession not requiring you to do illegal or unethical things.

Do your job wholeheartedly without worry about rewards.

There are really no Brahmins these days except in imagination. Manu Smruthi is not applicable these days plus it has been corrupted over the years. Also Smruthis are applicable only certain times.

Don’t hate anyone and be loving to all. Do your duty. You will be refining your mind to try to become a Brahmin as defined in Bhagavad Gita.

Such a lazy response. Of course true Brahmin exist in present times and Bhagavad Gita has nothing whatsoever to do with Brahminism. It's mainly concerned with yoga, general philosophy and rules for general conduct of any person.

The original question was based on wrong assumptions and sophomoric. I was trying to raise the level of discussion to show there are better ways to resolve the confusion. Looks like you lack the background to understand what was said.

I am convinced you have not studied Gita in any level of seriousness and I base this by your response.

Yes there are caste Brahmins and the caste system is like a curse and stain on India

Anyone can do Yoga. It is most popular outside India. It is a joke to talk about general philosophy while being ignorant about Bhagavad Gita and it’s teachings. None of these define a Brahmin caste person. More people study Gita outside Brahmin caste fir they are stuck in rituals.

General conduct of such Brahmins include babbling some chants incorrectly without any understanding whatsoever for they never studied Sanskrit properly. Such people are steeped in superstitious rituals for most part though there are exceptions. They don’t know what is legitimate Shastra based on Shruthi. This includes the priests also. Most of what they conduct themselves is not based on any real teachings. So this Brahmin caste is meaningless per your definition

No wonder the birth based Brahmins are dwindling every year. Younger generation is rejecting foolish beliefs and don’t want to deal with people wondering how to make money while keeping a tuft of hair or some silly concerns. They marry across other castes and religions.

The dwindling has to do with collective ignorance.

Anyway I am sure you do not have the background to understand what is written above.

So I cannot engage further in this mindless discussions.

Achyuta,
You posted a thread. We read it and try to respond to your query from our understanding of your post. There is no need to attack the responders. May be what you stated was not what you wanted to say. At the same time the responders are answering your question from their POV.
You were rude, and it was not warranted.

What is your meaning of a Brahmin?

I was born to Brahmin parents, so I am brahmin by birth. I studied and worked as an engineer, so I did the Sudra's work. Then I became a businessman, so I was doing a Vaisya's work. I never took up arms, so I did not do a Chatriya's work. I never lived on alms or donations. I am nor well versed in Vedas or rituals. I do not believe in meaningless rituals. I believe the Manu Smriti in its totality is an outdated rule book and not applicable in the modern world.

That is my thought, it is an opinion.

If opinions cannot be criticized then why criticize Shri Achyuta for his opinions. The post of Shri a-TB is littered with harsh and unwarranted statements. I believe he was piqued by the words of Shri Achyuta and hence his response was not balanced.

Lets not judge only those who say what we dont like. Let us look ourselves in the mirror

Please look at yourself in the mirror for your post is a judgment too in a holier than thou attitude

Joining the goverment service or taking a job in a public sector organisation gives protection of employment so that one can choose to be away from adharmic and unethical activities while discharging the duty without fear of losing the job. But, it requires good amount of effort and developing a sense of contentment in respect of remuneration, selectivity in socialisation etc.

Dear Sir,

It finally depends on what one desires in life.
Leading a life of a true Brahmin is possible.
Many priest earn well too.

Or if needed one can start their own veda pathashala or teach Sanskrit.
Or teach Vedanta, yoga etc.

In fact many Non Brahmins too in other countries teach Vedanta, Yoga etc.

Also one can start their own bussiness if one is a professional.
If one is a doctor, one can start their own practice...same goes for lawyers.

If one is in the IT sector then one is usually an employee till they start up their own like Narayanamurthy.

So what do your prefer?

But honestly even if a person is an employee, it does not diminish his Brahminess.

In the past Brahmins worked as ministers too in courts.
That too was being an employee of the King.
So I dont think there should be of any problem for you to pursue any job as long its Dharmic.

Dear Sravna,
Those who yield to any pressure to be corrupt are those who want to be corrupt owing to their excessive desire for money.

No one just becomes corrupt because others are corrupt.

There are 2 types of corrupt people

1)The first type is the corrupt ones who do not have a streak of Dharma in them.
They are ruthless and are addicted to Adharma and know that they are bad and feel proud that they abuse power.

2) The second type is one who started off so called Dharmic but then realizes he can be corrupt too..he starts to feel being Dharmic doesnt always = to money.
He desires to be corrupt to improve his life style..so he starts being corrupt.

The difference between the first type and second type is, the 2nd type will blame others, blame Kali yuga, blame the environment but never blames himself.

The 1st type wont blame anyone nor himself...he wont have remorse, he has plan B for everything and continues his corrupt practice with better firewalls.

Dear Renuka,

It is not as easy as it sounds to have a plan B for everything and go scot free. Dharma can act in such a way it scoops up all your plans up to Z in one fell stroke and you would be left gasping. Please dont underestimate divine power or overestimate human capabilities.

I was just explaining the types of corrupt people.

सच बोलो , मीठा बोलो अन्यथा मौन रहो is the best सनातन practise in any work anywhere; one has to trade off money/ promotions and choose a job requiring less than 50 hours efforts per week to sustain like a brahmin.
Regards.
