I started the thread "India on Road to being a Superpower" to recount all the positive developments of our great nation. Unfortunately the worldly realities consists of both the positive as well as the negative. So I am starting this thread to highlight our problems and perhaps someone could be wise enough to suggest something to overcome the negatives.

Since there are lot of Tamil Brahmins live in Bombay I thought fit to post the one below.

Raj's DNA same as that of a UPite, claims Swamy
PTI
Sunday, May 04, 2008

MUMBAI: Janata Party President Subramanian Swamy on Sunday claimed the DNA structure of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray, who targeted North Indians, was the same as that of a person from Uttar Pradesh.

"My friend who visits the hair dressing saloon frequented by Thackeray brought me a sample of his hair which I sent to a laboratory in Hyderabad for testing and comparison with a person from Uttar Pradesh," Swamy claimed at the release of Pankaj Phadnis authored "the British Mutiny of 1857" here.

The former Union Minister said since the DNA test on Raj's hair sample matched with that of a UPite, should it be construed that Thackeray's ancestors came from Uttar Pradesh.

Swamy said Thackeray should clarify as to what constitutes "Marathi" for him.

"If it is about speaking the language, then all non-Maharashtrians living in Mumbai do it very well. Does he want to say that Marathi-speaking people are of a different race?" he said.

Swamy said people should understand that the DNA of all Indians is the same. "We may be of different colour, height because of the geographical reasons," he added.

Swamy also said that the history propagated by the British in India that the Indian society comprised Aryan and Dravidian cultures has no base.
Swamy accused Jawaharlal Nehru of imposing colonial mentality on Indians. "Nehru took over as the leader because of an accident of history and the sacrifice of Sardar Patel. India needs a holiday from the Nehrus," he said.
Asserting that India has a only "Hindu past", Swamy said India can be a strong "Hindustan" only when Muslims and historians proudly acknowledge that their ancestors were Hindus and they are as much part of the Indian civilization as Hindus.

Some stories about Nehru as heard from my Father in Law...

One of my Father in Law's MENTOR had high posts in the government of Nehru era. He told my FIL that, Patel opposed Nehru's leadership . But it was Gandhi who gave the support to Nehru, Gandhi for some peculiar reason felt he was indebted to Motilal's family he also considered the personal sacrifice of Nehru as he spent a considerable part of his life-time in prison for the sake of the country.

One famous astrologer predicted the horrific ends of Nehru's family even before Indra Gandhi's assasination. Astrologer predicted, because of the remarks of Nehru on Vaidhika Dharma – (Nehru supposed to have told to throw our Vedic culture to the sea) his family is afflicted and unless they do remedial “prayachitta” their family members will court terrible death. Folks,

Nehru and Secularism are the favorite kicking items in portraying a revisionist history.

Pandit Nehru did a lot of good as well as made some big mistakes (like trusting the then prevailing idealism of Socialist model and under estimating Jinnah and other few mistakes).

Gandhi Ji is the father of the nation and will remain so. Now there is a deliberate effort to bring down his image. Patel willingly worked under Nehru and accepted his leadership. Any other hypothesis is hearsay and not recorded so in history and purely a conjecture.

What Nehru's family has gone through is God's will. Let us not connect it to any deeds. We have no business connecting such cause and effect.

While we may not agree politically with those in power, let us not create new history. I do not understand the connection between a thug in Maharashtra and Gandhi Ji!

How does this affect us as Tamil Brahmins?

Pranams,

"Asserting that India has a only "Hindu past", Swamy said India can be a strong "Hindustan" only when Muslims and historians proudly acknowledge that their ancestors were Hindus and they are as much part of the Indian civilization as Hindus."

I support Dr.Swamy's recent efforts towards the Rama Sethu issue and the Kanchi Acharyals issue. But I do not agree with his statement above.

India does not just have a Hindu history. Unfortunately it also has a Greek, Buddhist, Jain, Muslim, Sikh, Christian, Jewish, Parsi, Adivasi and what else history.

This confusion about what is majority identity with the national identity without properly acknowledging other minority cultures that make up the Indian mosaic will one day spell doom for India. Dr. Swamy should know better (he does know better, judging from his conversations in close meetings).

Just because we feel that the Congress government is anti majority (this is actually a very ridiculous notion on the face of it), we say things that are politically motivated to stir up the pot.

India is unique. And it is a very modern 'secular' country which is currently not working based on that grand secular principle because of the vote bank politics started by Srimathi Indira Gandhi. But this does not mean that such secular principles are invalid for modern India. Those who advocate 'Hindu Raj' are doing so only without taking in to account the realities of modern India.

Just my two cents.

And what about Nehru giving away huge chunks of Kashmir to Pakistan and China? What about have a a Chinese communist agent as the Defense Minister who winked at the Chinese invading India and grabbing vast territories of India?

His daughter clamped emegency and put down the freedom of the people because they were agitating against her misrule. During the emergency her family ran amok with unbridled power!

On her death her son came to power but we all know how his party went on a pogram of mercyless killing of the Sikhs in Delhi and other places. He himself kept a Air India jumbo jet for his personal use. His adventuristic interferance in the Srilankan conflict cost us over 3000 Indian soldiers killed by the LTTE.

His wife is hobnobbing with the killers of her husband and the soldiers of India.

Nehru and his vaarisus are our greatest misfortune. When will this curse end?

Oh, Yea! Do you know that the law of the country says that the Buddhist, Sikh and Jain are lumped into the Hindus?

Wow! KRS! My fellow patriot! (Oops, I made a mistake, sorry you are not an Indian any more as you are a U.S. citizen) Adivasi as a separate entity from the Hindus. Your secularism has the best of you! Hindu religion allows all kinds of religious practices by people whether they are vanavaasis or cityvaasis becuase Hindu see God everywhere not just in Heaven as the western religions claim. There is no set rule as to how to worship the God as laid down in the western religions. So please stop dividing our people in your quest of anti-Hinduism.

Also tell me: What is the proportion of Jewish, Christian, Parsi and Muslims in relation to Hindus in this country? Don't you know that the Hindus still constitute over 80% in this country? Why would other's get much more importance than they deserve to the detriment of the Hindus?
Just because we feel that the Congress government is anti majority (this is actually a very ridiculous notion on the face of it), we say things that are politically motivated to stir up the pot.
You can say that the Congress party is anti-majority and yet say it is a ridiculous notion to call it so!! Wow! Grand logic of talking the opposite in the same sentence!

We all know and experience that this unique undefined and 'resilient' secularism has been our bane. But you put down 'Hindu Raj'. Pray tell me where is it?

Gandhi Ji is the father of the nation and will remain so. Now there is a deliberate effort to bring down his image. Patel willingly worked under Nehru and accepted his leadership. Any other hypothesis is hearsay and not recorded so in history and purely a conjecture.

Please for heaven's sake don't deify people even if it be Gandhi and forbid critical examination of his deeds. People are entitled to it and they would make their assessment whether you like it or not.

It is history that Patel got majority of the votes of the CWC to become the PM of India but Gandhi vetoed it.

Gandhi was partial to Nehru and he had always been undemocratic in his style threatening fast at every conceivable opportunity. It was a time of partition of the country, the people were completely robbed by the British to the last bit of meat in their body and there was the religious war set off by the partition agreed to by Nehru and Gandhi and there was bloodletting throughout India and Pakistan. It was the sagacity of Sardhar Vallabhai Patel to have put his personal ambition behind to face the emerging crisis as the Home Minister. We salute the great warrior of our country.

What Nehru's family has gone through is God's will. Let us not connect it to any deeds. We have no business connecting such cause and effect.

Sorry! Our concept of God is not an autocrat or whisical tyrant. He is the dispenser of karmaphala. What you sow, so you reap! That is our philosophy. So what happened to Nehru family is their own doing. The way the remnants of his family are behaving we might see more of it.

Sowbhagyavathi Kamakshi Ji,

My response is in 'blue' below:

And what about Nehru giving away huge chunks of Kashmir to Pakistan and China? What about have a a Chinese communist agent as the Defense Minister who winked at the Chinese invading India and grabbing vast territories of India?

I have already said the he made a few big mistakes. Taking Kashmir issue to UN against the advice of Patel was a huge mistake. Listening to an incompetent and dogmatic Menon on defense was another huge mistake. But you say Menon was 'communist agent'. I have never heard anyone publicly accusing him of this, with any proof. Otherwise he should have been tried as a traitor.

His daughter clamped emegency and put down the freedom of the people because they were agitating against her misrule. During the emergency her family ran amok with unbridled power!

Each administration should stand on it's own. Emergency was a definite black mark on our history. But then when the people threw her out, she went!

A political dynasty can not exist unless people vote for one! India, like any other democracy will mature one day in this regard. No one has connected the Sikh massacre to Rajiv himself. It has been proven beyond doubt that the attacks were spontaneous and did not happen out of a 'program' unlike some other incidents that happened elsewhere.

He did what he thought was best for India. Of course, every administration does what they think is the best; 20/20 vision afterwards is always correct! What about NDA being caught by surprise on Kargil? How many lives were lost there?

His wife is hobnobbing with the killers of her husband and the soldiers of India.

A personal matter.

Nehru and his vaarisus are our greatest misfortune. When will this curse end?

When they are thrown out of power by the ballot box.

Oh, Yea! Do you know that the law of the country says that the Buddhist, Sikh and Jain are lumped into the Hindus?

Only for defining minorities. But go and ask each one of them whether they are part of Hinduism! Each will say that they have their own unique culture that is very distinct from the Hindus.

Wow! KRS! My fellow patriot! (Oops, I made a mistake, sorry you are not an Indian any more as you are a U.S. citizen)

Why such a personal attack? As a person coming from India, where I still have roots, I care for the welfare of that country. Good to know you are a patriot though!

Adivasi as a separate entity from the Hindus.

Meenakshi Ji, I am not the one who is dividing! Indian Constitution recognizes distinctly difference between SC and ST. They are now being 'initiated' in to Hinduism! If they are part of the religion already, what is the need to have a tribal program by RSS, initiating them in to Hinduism? They are the untold story of India, more than the Dalits. We as a country have treated them as the White settlers have treated the American Indians. They have their own unique culture(s), language(s) and way of life (religions), based on each of their unique place of residency. Saying this is not 'anti-Hindu', but rather the truth of the matter. A lot of them do not consider themselves Hindus. And that is what is important.

Also tell me: What is the proportion of Jewish, Christian, Parsi and Muslims in relation to Hindus in this country? Don't you know that the Hindus still constitute over 80% in this country? Why would other's get much more importance than they deserve to the detriment of the Hindus?
You can say that the Congress party is anti-majority and yet say it is a ridiculous notion to call it so!! Wow! Grand logic of talking the opposite in the same sentence!

What I was saying, which obviously went over your head, was that no political party can be truly against a 'majority' and hope to survive! The fact is that a large portion of Hindus keep on voting for it throut India. And that is a fact.

Please tell me how the minorities get much more importance 'to the detriment' of the Hindus? Can you specifically cite some instances?

We all know and experience that this unique undefined and 'resilient' secularism has been our bane. But you put down 'Hindu Raj'. Pray tell me where is it?

Pseudo secularism is worse than a majority imposed values on minorities. But at the same time, India can not be ruled with majority values imposed on the minorities. In India, 20% means 200 million people, all living side by side. And each community has its own proud traditions.

Please for heaven's sake don't deify people even if it be Gandhi and forbid critical examination of his deeds. People are entitled to it and they would make their assessment whether you like it or not.

Of course everyone is entitled to do so. I am also entitled to show the holes in their arguments. As I said often, I hold no power to shut up anyone, only the power to put forth cogent arguments, based on recorded history from reliable accepted sources.

Correct. Gandhi Ji did ask Patel not to run for the Presidency of Congress. Patel was the first one in Congress to accept the idea of partition. His contributions were many and numerous. But let us not forget that he went by Gandhi Ji's edict and accepted ruling the country under the Prime Ministership of Nehru. While Nehru was a theoretician, Patel was a practical man, and unfortunately he was too old by the time of independence. I firmly believe he would have been the first PM if he were younger.

Sorry! Our concept of God is not an autocrat or whisical tyrant. He is the dispenser of karmaphala. What you sow, so you reap! That is our philosophy. So what happened to Nehru family is their own doing. The way the remnants of his family are behaving we might see more of it.

Fruition of a specific Karmaphala in time is the province of Ishwara alone. None of us can look at a person and definitely say what Karma acquired when causes the specific result. To do so will be conjecture. Since our God decides this, why should we be even concerned about it? Does it bring us satisfaction to see terrible things happening to a person? If so, then go ahead and rejoice.

Pranams,

Dear Folks,

My posting on the prediction of astrologer, is to benefit our friends in making them aware of the consequences of a bad karma. It is like "don't play with fire and get burned" kind of sayings.

I've not posted, in any intention of rejoicing in the trajedy and suffering of others.

Some more on what I heard about him....

One more on Nehru's blunder, Patel was the home minister and the foreign - external affairs department was in the hands of Nehru. It was Nehru who insisted that he handle the Kashmir issue, despite Patel's objection.

Patel argued being a home minister the state of kashmir is under his control , if Nehru handled the Kashmir issue, then it will be seen by UN that Kashmir as an foreign issue to India and not as an internal affair.

Regards..

Just in a light tone...

If Gandhi is the father of nation, then "Thanthai Periyar" is father of Tamils - Because Tamils also accepted him as father. Then we have 2 Fathers.

Seriously..
I respect Ghandhi for his "Rama" Bhakti and his patriotic feeling for the nation. My salutes to him. With spineless Kings wagging their tail to the English. He stands tall.

But my concern is neither the Kings nor the modern english educated leaders truly cared for the Vedic spirit. So the culture is left protectorless for many centuries, save for some devoted souls. We owe to those great souls for whatever remanant left.

A fraudulent ‘Sonia’ model Congress M.P. from Nepal

Mystory about a first rate political (apart from being a regular!) criminal called Mani Kumar Subba, a Congress MP from Nepal (!), may read like an Agatha Christie crime thriller.

I understand that the CBI, after conducting a detailed investigation about the criminal antecedents of this distinguished Congressman, has filed a detailed report about Subba’s great expertise in forging documents relating to his own date and place of birth from time to time. Everything about him has been dubious and mysterious. It is evident from Lok Sabha (LS) records, his own affidavits and the information supplied by him to the passport authorities – all this basic details relating to a Congress MP kept on changing from year to year. The LS records put his year of birth as 1950, 1951 and 1958. Likewise, the LS was taken into confidence by Subba when he kept on changing his place of birth from Tezpur in Assam to Siliguri in West Bengal. The LS records, examined by CBI, show three different dates of birth for Mani Kumar Subba, who started as a Congress MLA before getting elected from Tezpur, Assam to the Lok Sabha for four consecutive terms. The affidavit signed by Subbaon January 27, 1998 for the 12th Lok Sabha stated his age as 48, meaning that he was born in 1950. But according to the Lok Sabha publication relating to the biographical sketches of the MPs of the 12th Lok Sabha revealed his date of birth as March 16, 1951. However in the affidavit filed by Subba for the 13th Lok Sabha, he stated that his age was 47 years as on January 1, 1997, thus confirming that his year of birth was 1950. But, paradoxically, according to the biographical sketch of the 13th Lok Sabha MPs, Subbawas born on March 16, 1958, which was maintained in the 14th Lok Sabha records.
Subba’s passport story is even more exciting. The passport issued to him by the Regional Passport Officer (RTO) Guwahati stated that Subba was born on March 16, 1951, at Harmati, P.O. Merbil, PS Bihpuria, Lakhimpur District, Assam. This information was furnished by the CBI in response to the order to probe the allegations leveled by a petitioner called B.N.Singh, accusing Subba of being none other than Maniraj Limboo, a citizen of Nepal who after conviction in a murder case by Nepalese Courts, had fled to India. Though the CBI had failed to get hold of the certified copies of the Nepalese Court Orders relating to Subba’s crimes, yet it was able to get hold of an affidavit dated October 3, 1985, by Subba before the Executive Magistrate, Tezpur in which he had stated “Mani Kumar Subba and Maniraj Limboo are one and the same persons and that there was a criminal case against him in the name of the Maniraj Limboo.”
Even more thrilling is the crime story relating to the Educational Qualifications of Mani Kumar Subba. Here the disgusting Congress criminal Subba and the even more despicable Sonia Gandhiare on the same footing. Subba had earlier stated in an affidavit filed in the Supreme Court that he passed the 8th standard from Gandhi Vidyalaya, Bordubi, Tinsukia Districtin the year 1972. After due investigation, the CBI found out that this School started functioning only from January 1, 1973, with classes upto the 6th. This in effect means that Subba passed 8th Class, a year before the establishment of the School! It is quite another climactic story that the Classes from 8th to 10th were added to Gandhi Vidyalaya on from 1999. In a mood of helpless exasperation the CBI reported “Mani Kumar Subba would be 22 years old when he reportedly passed the 8th Class from Gandhi Vidyalaya”.

The story of Subba’s date of birth is a crime thriller. Likewise, the drama relating to his place of birth is a hair rising crime thriller. The tale of his educational qualifications reads like a Sherlock Holmes crime story. To cap it all, we have the titillating story regarding his matrimonial adventures/mis-adventures! After a detailed enquiry, the CBI reported “While Mani Kumar Subba married Tilmaya Chang in the year 1978 as per his declaration on Page 6 of his affidavit 2007, he married Jyoti Subba aka Jyoti Limboo in the year 1978 as per biographical sketch of member of 12th and 13th LS. He married Jyoti Subba also in 1989 as per the biographical sketch of member of 14th LS and as per his affidavit dated April 2007”.

In these columns, as early as in March 2007, I had written an article on this controversial Congress MP under the title “A ‘Great’ Congress MP from Nepal”. I had observed as follows: “In the decadent India of today, the Congress Party has let loose an orgy of corruption in our public life - indescribably vicious and brazen. It is not correct to say that all Muslims in India are terrorists. Yet at the same time it cannot also be disputed that all the terrorists in India are Muslims. Likewise it is not correct to say that all knaves and scoundrels in India are Congressmen. At the same time it cannot also be doubted that most of the Congressmen today are generally scoundrels and knaves. Why is it so? Why should it be so? The answer is simple. The Congress High Command by convention extends its full support and patronage only to knaves and scoundrels…. For at least 16 years, Congress MP Moni Kumar Subba has brazenly snubbed allegations that he is not an Indian. The shocking news is that he is not an Indian national. He is reported to be a Nepali national and he has so far successfully lied about his age, education and place of birth to the Election Commission and Parliament. If one is to go by official records of Congress MP Moni Kumar Subba, he was born THRICE AND AT THREE PLACES. The Congress MP from Tezpur and an escaped criminal in Nepal have many things common between them! M K Subba claims to have studied in the Gandhi Vidhyalaya in Assam in 1972. But the school didn’t even exist at that time. The cruel joke is that all the so called law enforcement agencies of the Government of India and the State Governments have totally failed to identify the glorious background of this great son of India (?) that is not Bharat!”

(contd.)

continued from prev. posting...

Like M.K. Subba, Sonia Gandhi also gave a false affidavit regarding her educational qualifications obtained from Cambridge University. Sonia-Congress Party has degenerated into a Servants of Sonia Society (SOSS). All the Congress men and all the Congress Ministers are in her bonded labour. Her Indian citizenship like that of Mani Kumar Subba is equally dubious and questionable. Despite the highly condemnable, partisan and one-sided Judgment given by the Honourable Supreme Court of India (viewing her fraudulent educational qualifications fictitiously obtained from the University of Cambridge as a ‘Stale issue’), the whole country knows the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth about her proudly proclaimed educational and academic background!. Now by accepting the ‘Order of Leopold’ from the King of Belgium in November 2006, she has clearly shown that she has contempt for India and the Indian people. She has greater contempt for the Law of Indian Constitution. It is a known public fact that Sonia treats the office of the President of India as a disposable Pawn to be moved about on the Chess Board of Indian Politics at her sweet will and pleasure depending upon political exigencies from time to time.

Supreme Court orders Venugopal's reinstatement
Thursday May 8 2008 11:32 IST

PTI

NEW DELHI: The Central Government on Thursday received a major setback with the Supreme Court striking down the law that enabled premature retirement of noted cardiologist P Venugopal as the Director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) after a raging row with Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss.

A bench of Justices Tarun Chatterjee and H S Bedi upheld the appeal filed by Venugopal challenging the law as being discriminatory and purposely brought in to superannuate him.

Venugopal had contended that the amendment was brought with the sole purpose of removing him from his office due to his differences with Ramadoss.

The amendment relating to the AIIMS Act fixed the upper age of retirement of Director at 65 years leading to Venugopal's retirement.

Senior counsel and former Law Minister Arun Jaitely had contended on behalf of Venugopal that the Act was illegal as the High Court had in March last year upheld his continuation in the post and the matter was pending in the apex court. But the Centre in the meantime brought the amendment in Parliament, he said.
--------------------
Who is Dr. Venugopal?

A world famous thorasic surgeon and a Brahmin by birth. Here is what Dr.Abdul Kalam ex-President of India had to say of Dr. Venugopal.

"I happened to see the beginning of stem cell research for different purposes including brain research. I would like to share with you an important stem cell research application in the field of cardiology. When I met Dr.P. Venugopal, Director, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) a famous cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon, he said in one of the cardiac diseases, where conventional medical and surgical treatment were ineffective because of the affliction of the heart muscle, use of antilogous bone marrow stem cells implantation into the diseased heart muscles had been applied in order to improve the function of heart muscle. This kind of application of this procedure is the latest and very few cases have been done in the world, the first time in India. This is expected to open new frontiers in the treatment of patients for regeneration of heart muscles, thereby giving new hope for the patients suffering from end stage heart disease."

Who is Dr.Anbumani Ramadoss?

Dr.Anbumani Ramadoss is the son of Dr.Ramadoss the leader of a Dravidian outfit called the PMK that has garnered the Vanniar caste vote bank. Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss became a member of parliament only because he could hold a caste ticket and this enabled him to be a member of the cabinet of the higgedly-piggedly promiscuity called the UPA. He is of no known credential other than a medical degree holder. Dr.Ramadoss shocked the nation by dismissing the world famous cardiac surgeon Dr.Venugopal on his 64th birthday whose only crime was to belong to the Brahmin community.

I am not a film goer at least in the recent years after it became an outlet to advocate anti-Brahmin and anti-Hindu messages in the name of social themes.

Therefore I evinced little interest in who is who in the filmdom except for the fact it is completely taken over by the Dravidian outfits and produces their leaders among actors and cadres among fans. It is not an exaggeration to say that the movie business in Kolliwood dominates and directs the Dravidian politics of Tamilnadu.

I have heard that Kamal Hassan was born as a Brahmin but is an athiest and a communist fellow traveller. His latest production called 'Dasavatharam', I learn, is to play cruel joke on the Hindus of Tamilnadu and kindle flames of insensitivity to their religious sentiments. He has roused the quiet and pious Hindus.

In its petition, the International Sri Vaishnava Dharma Samrakshana Society, represented by its president, Swami Govinda Ramanuja Dasa, said the title Dasavatharam was a sign of insulting Hinduism.

He also pointed out that the trailer of the film contains some offensive scenes such as clash between Saivites and Vaishnavites. In a scene, they picturised one of the characters put his leg on God's idol and it is certainly an insult to the religious sentiments.

The petitioner submitted that his grievance was restricted to the role played by the actor as Sri Ramanujar and the connected scenes of violence.

The Madras High Court has ordered to send notice to producer Oscar Ravichandran, script writer cum hero of the film Kamal Hassan and director Ravikumar on a writ petition filed by a Hindu Religious Organization.

The petition also seeks a direction to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to remove scenes, which hurt the sentiments of Hindus in the Tamil film Dasavatharam while issuing the Censorship Certificate.

Hindu Munnani convenor, Rama Gopalan, says: “During the campaigns by Muslim satrap Malik Gafoor, the Meenakshi Amman temple in Madurai was attacked, and fearing a similar fate Vaishnavites had taken away the idols from Srirangam temple and hidden it for 43 years. Does Haasan have the guts to show such facts?”

Let us see some cases of how this super secularism is practiced in India.

Shah Bano Case: When the Secularists made sure that the law be not uniform for all citizens appeasing the Muslims for their vote bank.

Shah Bano, a 62 year old Muslim woman and mother of five from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, was divorced by her husband in 1978. The Muslim family law (marriage, gifts, inheritance, adoption and a few other civil laws are under the purview of personal laws in India - they are different for Christians, Muslims and Hindus) allows the husband to do this without his wife's consent: the husband just needs to say the word Talaaq before witnesses for a valid divorce. There are different classifications on Talaaq.

Shah Bano, because she had no means to support herself and her children, approached the courts for securing maintenance from her husband. When the case reached the Supreme Court of India, seven years had elapsed. The Supreme Court invoked Section 125 of Code of Criminal Procedure, which applies to everyone regardless of caste, creed, or religion. It ruled that Shah Bano be given maintenance money, similar to alimony.

The orthodox Muslims in India felt threatened by what they perceived as an encroachment of the Muslim Personal Law, and protested loudly at the judgement. Their spokesmen were Muslim community leaders Obaidullah Khan Azmi, MJ Akbar and Syed Shahabuddin, They formed an organization known as the All India Muslim Personal Law Board and threatened to agitate in large numbers in all major cities. The then Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, agreed to their demands and cited the gesture as an example of "secularism".

In 1986, the Congress (I) party, which had an absolute majority in Parliament at the time, passed an act 'The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Divorce) Act 1986' that nullified the Supreme Court's judgment in the Shah Bano case. This act upheld the Muslim Personal Law and writ as excerpted below:

"Every application by a divorced woman under section 125… of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, pending before a magistrate on the commencement of this Act shall, notwithstanding anything contained in that code… be disposed of by such magistrate an accordance with the provisions of this Act."

The Government with its absolute majority passed the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Divorce) Act, 1986 to dilute the secular judgment of the Supreme Court. The Statement of Objects and Reasons of this Act (i.e. the objective of the Act) needs a mention. According to the stated objects of the Act, where a Muslim divorced woman is unable to maintain herself after the period of iddat, the Magistrate is empowered to make an order for the payment of maintenance by her relatives who would be entitled to inherit her property on her death according to Muslim Law...But where a divorced woman has no relatives or such relatives..has not enough means to pay the maintenance the magistrate would order the State Waqf Board to pay the maintenance. The 'liability' of husband to pay the maintenance was thus restricted to the period of the iddat (3 months) only.

The dismayed Hindus saw it as an `appeasement' of the minority community and discriminatory to non-Muslim men, because they were still bound to pay maintenance under Section 125, Cr. PC.

It is doubtful if Dr Anbumani Ramadoss or the Union government will mend their ways in the wake of the Supreme Court verdict on the way the head of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi was removed last year. But there are clear lessons for policy-makers and concerned citizens from the entire episode, and these need to be underlined for the sake of public health policy. Dr Ramadoss so disliked the AIIMS chief, Dr P Venugopal, that he had the man removed despite the latter’s legally fixed term of office;when the High Court stayed this, he had the Union cabinet approve the draft of a law changing the terms of appointment with retrospective effect. He then had this issued by ordinance, a measure to make law without Parliament approval meant by our Constitution’s makers for an emergency. A whip was issued by the ruling coalition to later get this through Parliament. The SC says the entire thing violates law and procedure and the government ought to be ashamed of itself. Predictably, instead of taking responsibility, Dr Ramadoss says the Cabinet is equally to blame, and the Prime Minister is silent; his party’s spokesman has had the gall to blame Parliament, saying they enacted it!

Karnataka goes to polls today!

Sonia’s last best chance
Saturday May 10 2008 09:19 IST Aditya Sinha
Last week, this column extolled the virtues of Rahul Gandhi. Some of you took it very seriously. Some people took it so seriously that they decided to leave the Congress party and join Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party.

True, Congress matriarch Sonia Gandhi probably calls the desertion a case of sour grapes since the man who left, Akhilesh Das, lost his ministry in the last Cabinet reshuffle. And she’s partially right: there is a causeand- effect factor at work. In another era, however, a Congress-wallah dropped from the government would simply bide his time, await the next time the party came to power, and then stake his claim to a ministry. In those days, party workers knew there would always be a next time. These days, on the other hand, the future looks a tad uncertain.

In fact, the topic of conversation in the political class these days revolves around how vital it is for Sonia that the Congress captures power in Karnataka (voting for the first phase of polling is happening today). The party has lost a series of elections in big states in the recent past: UP, Punjab and Gujarat in 2007. The UP by-elections last month are noteworthy because Rahul gave it everything he had – he tried sleeping with dalits (okay, he spent the night at the house of a dalit family in his constituency, Amethi), and he tried sleeping with Amar Singh, the general secretary of the Samajwadi Party, a clear case of the metaphorical sleeping- with-the-enemy. All that came of it was that the electorate got the impression he was sleepwalking through the by-elections, and his candidates lost their deposits in four of the five assembly constituencies.

UP’s political equations are a lot different than the equations in Karnataka, where the Congress party is projected by a couple of surveys to get lots of votes and lots of seats too. How many is anyone’s guess – as mentioned in last week’s column, the delimitation exercise has become a key uncertainty factor, as has the fact of whether the main opposition party, the BJP, can capitalize on the steadily climbing inflation that Indian householders have been suffering lately. One thing is for sure, however: if the Congress messes it up in Karnataka, then Sonia will be the biggest loser. She will be seen as ineffectual as a vote-gatherer, which is, of course, the only reason why the Congress party puts up with her. The desertions, then, will gather momentum.

You may argue that of the big states going to polls later this year – Delhi, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh – three are BJP-ruled and are likely to see an antiincumbency factor in their results. This cannot be denied. Yet it would not be surprising if the BJP, in order to blunt anti-incumbency, were to demoralize the Congress by staging periodic defections in the run-up to the assembly elections. These need not be defectors from the states going to the elections; more UP or Bihar Congresswallahs will do the trick. And it will not be difficult to lure them away, for they will all be wondering what is going to happen to them in the next parliamentary elections, which are due at the latest a year from now.

What does this mean for the Congress party? After all, it has seen desertions before: in the 1990s, high-profile Congressmen like the late Rangarajan Kumaramangalam crossed over to the BJP. It has also seen splits before – large ones like the one effected by Indira Gandhi, and smaller ones like those by V P Singh, G K Moopanar and Sharad Pawar. Some partymen will bravely say any desertions now would be a case of good riddance, and would purify the party which as in the past will bounce back.

The Congress could have been in a shape to bounce back if it had played its cards right. The Congress would be in better shape if Sonia had not treated the party like a family business: for example, the decision that daughter Priyanka would visit Nalini, a convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, was taken as if it were a private decision, and that’s symptomatic of the problem, for the assassination was a matter concerning a former head of government, not just a family.

Similarly, in the ten years that Sonia has been the party boss, she could have forced organizational elections on the Congress; instead, she has lately chosen to foist Rahul in the hierarchy – another example of the party being treated like a family business. (Of course there are many who think that it isn’t only the party that Sonia treats as if it were a family business).

As a consequence, the Congress is too sclerotic to bounce back, and instead looks as if it is going to wither into something increasingly smaller, like the party of former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda. It may, one day in the future, become a single-person party, like that of another former prime minister, the late Chandra Shekhar. It may even become like the Janata Party, which once ruled India, but which no longer has representation in Parliament.

Some people speculate that the role of the Congress as a pole of Indian politics will be taken by Mayawati, and in fact, that has come to be seen as a welcome thing by even the upper castes in north India (perhaps it is analogous to the whites in the USA lending support to African-American Barack Obama). But even if that happens, it isn’t likely to happen overnight; so do not despair if, as this column has said before, the next parliamentary elections gives us another hodge-podge coalition government. We’ll still grow at nine per cent.

So what should Sonia do if the Congress, despite coming close, does not capture power in Karnataka? If she’s smart, she will read the writing on the wall. She will tell Manmohan Singh to take a walk, and she will make her son the prime minister. Not because he will revitalize the party or the country (he can’t), and not because he will stem the desertions (he won’t), but because her party is unlikely to be in a position to choose the prime minister again in the foreseeable future. This will be her last chance to make her son the prime minister, so she might as well go ahead and have fun while the party lasts. In both senses of the term.

Dear Sri HH!

I'm talking about Kings of the time 300 years before when the english entered. Too much self- bragging and infighting killed them. They should be dharmically not balanced at the time of british entrance.

"Self-praise is equal to suicide" so says Mahabharatam - a very interesting story was spun based on this "idiom" .

Basically, I guess this undone them- "self-praise" with too many "Jalras" surrounding them.

"Idiparai Illatha Emara Mannan
Kedupparillanum Kedum"

I've a picture-book taken by the english, with sarcastic comment on the rajput kings who paid vassals to the british. (oops - rather the british paid salary to the kings- it is completely reversed)

To effect one good and effective King, the subjects(people) should have gathered a lot of punya, that may be another reason for their failure.

Regards

JAIPUR: Seven powerful bomb blasts occurred at crowded markets in the Pink City in a span of ten minutes on Tuesday evening. Thirty-five people were killed in the blasts, police said.

Three persons perished in a blast at Sanganer Gate, eyewitnesses said.

Scores of wounded people were ferried to hospitals soon after the blasts took place at Tripolia Bazar, where large number of devotees had turned up at a Hanuman temple, Johari Bazar, Manas Chowk, Badi Choupal and Choti Choupal in the walled part of the state capital.

Rajasthan Director General of Police A S Gill said it was "obviously a terror attack."

RDX used in terror strike, probe points at Jehadi involvement
Attacks aimed at Hanuman temples to disturb communal peace

JAIPUR: High explosive RDX was used in the terror strike here, a senior police official said on Wednesday as tell-tale signs pointed towards the involvement of Bangladesh- based Harkat-ul-Jehadi Islami in the serial blasts.

The explosive devices were fitted with timers and planted on cycles, a modus operandi similar to the one used in last year's blasts in court premises in Uttar Pradesh in which HUJI was involved, police said.

Eight persons including a man injured in the blasts and a rickshaw puller are being questioned, they said, noting that seven teams of Rajasthan police and intelligence branch have begun the probe into the blasts.

"It was a cent per cent a terrorist attack on the pattern of blasts in the court premises in UP in November last year. RDX was used in containers tagged to cycles along with timer devices," Additional Director General of Police (Crime) A K Jain said.

An examination of the blast sites indicated that the bombs were filled with ball bearings and small iron pieces to act as splinters, sources close to the investigation said.

HUJI may have been able to form sleeper cells in Rajasthan, they said, adding that a proper investigation into the blast at a sufi shrine in Ajmer last year could have been a pointer.

"We have collected sufficient evidence from the places of the blasts. They are being analysed by our technical experts," Superintendent of Police, Jaipur, Raghvendra Suhasa said, noting that one unexploded bomb, found from the blast site, has been defused.

Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta told reporters in New Delhi that "our priority now apart from vigilance and being on the alert will be to get hold of the people reponsible" for the blasts.

The sources said the blasts triggered in areas close to two Hanuman temples in the old city could have been aimed at disturbing communal peace.

Chennai escapes Jaipur’s fate

NT Bureau | Thu, 15 May, 2008,03:31 PM
. Perhaps, there was a plan to do a Jaipur in Chennai too. But fortunately, it has been nipped in the bud itself.

Well, the city police have netted three Muslim terrorists during a search at a lodge in Parry’s on Wednesday night.

. It has now emerged that the three may have been plotting to kill Hindu leaders in the State and also possibly trigger some random blasts in the State.

Police are tight-lipped about what they have elicited from the three hardcore elements. But sources in the know on Thursday confirmed that the three were indeed ‘big catches’. Police have also refused to reveal the identity of the arrested persons.

It may be recalled that Chennai city came under a huge security blanket in the wake of Jaipur serial bomb blasts which killed around 80 persons on Tuesday.

Security has been stepped up at all important places in the city, including railway stations, airport and temples.
Police men were deployed in sensitive places and also near hospitals and parking areas. Following requisition to conduct thorough checks in lodges and hotels, police conducted random checks in lodges and hotels, especially in North Chennai looking for suspicious elements.

Acting on a tip-off about the movement of suspicious ultras in a lodge at Mannadi, a police team headed by ‘Q’ branch officer Pandian, Deputy Commissioner Karrupasamy and four Assistant Commissioners deputed 40 policemen for an intensive check in lodges.

In one such check, police rounded up three persons who are believed to be Muslim terrorists and took them for interrogation.

They initially said that they had come to Chennai for a business deal. Not convinced with their reply, police intensified their enquiry and asked them to produce proof supporting their deal. Since they did not possess any proof, the interrogations lead the cops on a terror trail.

The trio who were tight-lipped about their plan, after a thorough questioning disclosed that they had planned a blatant attack on leaders belonging to prominent Hindu organisations.

Police are continuing with their interrogations to obtain the exact details of their plans and the motive behind their attack.

Following this, special teams have been formed to keep a strict vigil on the lodges and hotels located both in the city and its suburb.

Hi Raamaa .. Can you follow the investigations and keep reporting about the 3 muslim terrorists ? Most of your threads look like a spam. So for a change keep track of the developments of this issue .. Everyone knows how to copy paste. Please do some value addtion and reduce redunt reporting.

Keep reporting about the 3 mulims please .. we are all interested to know more about it.

Looks like another incarnation of the quitted soul of dubious nationality!

Folks,

I want to make something very clear to you all.

1. I have never used any other avatar than 'KRS' in any Forums that I have contributed to in my life. As I have said before, I have no interest in taking any other avatars in this life, unlike some here who seem to take different avatars even within this Forum - nothing wrong with that, of course. But it tells you something about those persons.

2. I was born in India, spent the first 23 years of life there and have moved to the US where I currently reside as a naturalized citizen. There is nothing 'dubious' about my nationality.

3. Indian Ji might be more offended about being branded as my incarnation!

I have only said that I will not 'post' anymore. That does not mean that I will sit and watch any and all insults to go by without response.

Regards,
KRS

Taufeeq: Ultra-short deadly ultra
Saturday May 17 2008 11:20 IST B Gokul Vannan

CHENNAI: Four special police teams were rushed to Adhirampateenam in Thanjavur and other parts of the State on Friday to hunt for terror suspect Taufeeq alias Chotu and his associate Abu Tahir of Chennai.

The duo managed to elude the police during Thursday's raid at a house in Mannady during which three suspected terrorists were arrested.

Taufeeq, said to be only four feet tall, is a native of Adhirampateenam and a key member of the Eraivan Oruvaney (God is one) outfit. The group has links in Saudi Arabia, said sources. Taufeeq is wanted in at least two cases in his native town for murder. According to a police source, between 1999 and 2001, Taufeeq went to Saudi Arabia and trained under Abu Hamza and Abu Ummar.

Following the Gujarat riots in 2002, Taufeeq, with funding from Hamza and Ummar founded the Islamic Defence Force. He was given CDs about the riots and other propaganda material to distribute among Muslim communities in Tamil Nadu.

Taufeeq was arrested in 2002 for stocking huge piles of explosives in Kodungaiyur. Police were then pursuing the two Saudi Arabians, Hamza and Ummar. By then, Taufeeq was released on bail. His case was transferred to Special Intelligence Wing, CB-CID.

Later that year, the Mumbai police arrested Taufeeq for his alleged involvement in a Mumbai bus bomb blast case and subsequently booked him under POTA. Three years later, a POTA court acquitted him. For two years, Taufeeq went underground and formed Eraivan Oruvaney, said police sources.

In 2007, resurfaced and extended his activities to more propaganda work. He had his base in Mannady.

A senior police official said, 'If we arrest Taufeeq, we will we be able to determine if other fundamentalist organisations are operating in the State under him and who their targets are.'
