In the book samkseba dharma sastram page no.37 yagyapaveedham manu says cotton nool for brahmins; for shathriyas sanal;for vysya from sheep hair;

maadhaveeyathil poonal 9 nool ullathaga sei. 3 noolgal keeley and 9 noolgal mela murukki sey. put a knot. prathistai sey. thakkli yil nool noorkavum. indha noolai 4 viralgalil 96 times moonraaha sutru. this is called shannavathi. aapohista; hiranyavarnam; pavamaana mantrngal solli prokshi. then chant gayathri manthram. indha noolai moonraaha madithu murukki then stroke in in your palm for 3 times and then give a knot and place it.

Then do aavaahanam of nava dhandhu devadai and granthi devadai do pooja; and then show to sun chanting uthayam manthram.
omkaaram;agni;cow;soman; pitharaha;vishnu; dharmaha; sahala devatha;prajaapathi are the navadhandhu devadas.

many varieties of poonal prathishtai are there.slight changes will be there.

Amazing. Never knew so much goes to making a Poonal. Wonder if all this is still followed for making it.
