An already-approved, home-grown technology for faster trains has got a new lease of life more than four years after it was first introduced successfully. The “push-pull” train, wherein two engines—instead of one—pull a set of coaches, is in the final stages of roll-out.The two engines, hard-wired to act as one, not only provide additional power to the train but also reduce the acceleration and deceleration times of the train significantly, making higher average speeds possible.

Last year, the Railways spent around Rs 60,000 crore on subsidising its passenger business. Railways minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has also publicly said several times that if the expenditure of train operations is Rs 100, the passenger is charged only Rs 45. There are deliberations to set the fares of the push-pull trains, which promise a better, upgraded experience than the usual non-AC ride, at around 10-15 per cent higher than comparable non-AC trains. Whether or not the political masters bite that bullet in an election year is to be seen. “The fares are still being finalised,” said an official.
