Now I am reading Kalkis பென்னியின் செல்வன் again after a gap of about 10 years. This novel is set at the glorious period of Cholas. Important Character of the ruling family are சுந்தர சேழர் bedridden paraplegic ailing & presiding over the happening around him with out any control.ஆதித்ய கரிகாலன் his eldest son, staying far away in Kancheepuram, angry fuming violent unpredictable avoiding the head quarters, reluctant to meet him to avoid confrontations and maintaining diplomacy in his relationships with other family members.அருள்மொழி வர்மன் the younger son செல்லப்பிள்ளை staying with father glorified protected etc.& குந்தவை politically shrewed manipulative daughter, attached more to அருள்மொழி and whom she wants to ascend the thrown even though he was younger son. Finally the story ends as she desired since the elder son dies (?eliminated)
The same situation seems to be their in the ruling family of Tamil Nadu Headed by Wheel Chaired Cholan with his children similar to those historic charters of Kalki. Is History repeating? It is amazing to note the similarity of the "Chola Nadu Politics" of olden days and "Tamil Nadus Politics" of today at least with regards to ruling families Jambu:fish2:

Kalki's vision!

There is much wisdom and substance in DrJambu's short entry above on PonniyinSelvan, relating the political settings of the historic times to the trends obtaining now. one is asking within ones own mind, 'where is vanathy, where is poonkuzhali, and vanthiyathevan, and azhvarnambi.....', perhaps they are all there somewhere on the stage, continuing the great drama, some in the Delhi area, some scattered in SouthIndia....etc. i marvel at Kalki's vision (they were are visionaries, Kalki, Rajaji, Devan, all of them - like Chandilyan more recently), and at the current leaders' ability to learn from history and ability to make history repeat itself!)

There is another character who has a lean on the thrown in this story மதுராந்தகர் His widowed mother is against any type of political spoils for him and makes him a saiva saint. There were people instigating him to fight for the thrown But he was effectively neutralized because there was no real following for him . Here again a cousin in the Wheeled Chola"s family said some thing in Dhinkaran and paid for it dearly! Gets Complicated and Interesting? Jambu:sick:

.....Maniyan's deft artistic touch totally supporting Kalki's characterisation, was remarkable. Maduranthakan's figure as drawn by Maniyan, speaks volumes of the character. and, when i see the analytical comments above, some kind of resemblance to a senior person mentioned above, also inevitably springs to my mind! -- rj

Till now we are talking about the similarity of characters. Now I see at least on dissimilarity. சுந்தர சோழர் Was never interested in the Crown or Throne He was in gay abandon with the "சமுத்ர ராணி" roaming around the Island Kingdom bartering even the kingdom for her love. But when he was called back to main land the crown and the throne were thrust on him and he could never meet her again to explain. He was depressed till his last days with the guilt of abandoning her But todays ruler"s story is different After CNAs death the chair should have gone to Nedunchezian next in line But it was manipulated and and was grabbed by the founder of current dynasty . As per the customs prevailing thenசுந்தர சோழன் could not have the dumb lady as his பட்டமஹிஷி . But he could have kept her in his harem instead . He did not do it . Now in this era one cannot have more than one living spouse legally. But is this applicable to the ruler? It looks old Chola"s thinking was modern . Todays rulers think backwards! Jambu:alien:
