Wish you all a Happy New Year, Vijayanama Samvatsaram.
Today is the Chandramana Ugadhi, the lunar New year Day celebrated in Andhra and Karnataka. Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra, Thappan in Rajastan, Chetichand in Sindh.
On this day let us remember for a second our great thinkers who have done marvelous works on Astronomy, Advanced Mathematics and cosmology an accurate system, next only to the modern atomic clock. Among them were Varahamihira (490 AD), who set out Bijakarana, and wrote Pancha Sidhantha and brihathsamhita, Arya bhatta (499 AD) who wrote Arya Sidhantha, Brahma Gupta (598 AD) who compiled Sayan Mesha Sankramana, Munjala (932 AD) who invented Ayana movement and set an year as Kala. Shantananda who calculated the positions of the Sun and the Moon according to Constellations and wrote "Bhasvatikarana". Bhaskara (1114 AD) who wrote "Udayantara". Ganeshdaivajna (1478 AD)who compiled "Gruhalagnava Garga".

Could someone please enlighten us on the origin of Ugadhi?
From which day was the Telugu/Kannada calendar started recording days?
What was the historic event or episode which heralded the beginning of the Telugu/Kannada Calendar?

Thanks for adding useful information.
It is interesting to note that the whole of India celebrate New Year either on 14th April or Ugadi day.
I think Ugadi is based on Lunar calendar and Tamil New Year day is based on solar calendar.
Like Ugadi is celebrated by several communities, Tamil New Year day is the ew year day or day of celebraion for Malayalees (Vishu), Punjabis (Vaisakhi) ,New Year Day for Bengalis, Singalese and Nepalese.

Could you please enlighten me on the Origin and history of the Tamil Calendar?
When is the absolute beginning of the Tamil Caledar? On what basis, historical event etc was it started? What are the changes it was subjected to?
There are different versions. Some say Agasthya Muni pioneered the Tamil Calendar based on some event in his life. Some say it is based on Thiruvalluvar's life.
Could you please provide the correct version?

With very limited book knowledge I am afraid I may not be able to answer your quires. But I shall try to share with you what I know little on the subject.
We Tamils follow Sauramana Ugadi or Solar Calendar of new year. As you know, Ugadi (Yugadi) means beginning of an era (year).Sauramana Ugadi is celebrated when the Sun enters the Mesha rasi. Whereas Chandramana, Ugadi celebrated on the first day (Pradyami) of bright fortnight(Suklapaksha) of the first month (Chaitra masam) in the first season of the year Vasantha Ritu, the spring season. Both are based on nature and our agricultural operations. Exact time of
our "Varusha Pirappu" is based on the auspicious time of Sun entering Mesha Rasi from Meena Rasi and starts the new Zodiac Cycle. It is also called Mesha Sankramana Punya kalam. This is celebrated in Puthaandu in Tamil Nadu, Vishu in Kerala, Bihu in Assam, Naba Barsh in Bengal, Naba Bishuba Sankaranthi in Odisha, Baishaki in The Punjab and Bisu by Tuluvas.
I have not come across any date of biginning of this Calendar in my search.

I think there is still a misconception or mis-understanding of Tamil New Year, like Nandana or Vijaya. These are not exactly Tamil New Year names. They are common all over India and are Sanskrit names. We follow the ancient custom on Sun's movement who is life giver and season maker. Maybe the vast extent of Mughalai rule beyond the South border influenced the people to change to Lunar cycle. But these do not change the positions of Sun, Moon and other planets any where except by a few minutes.
