The festive season of Onam is here. It is believed that the legendary King of Malabar visits his Kingdom every year
during Onam Festival, to ensure well being of his people. He is welcomed by all Malayalees with reverence and gaiety. The festival is all about relishing grand feast known as Onam Sadya, New clothes and family meet spreading good cheer.

HAPPY ONAM TO EVERYONE HERE!

Hey you guys celebrate Onam?? I thought only Keralites celebrate?

In that case Eid Mubarak to everyone here cos Eid is only officially over when the month of Zulkaedah starts.
So Eid is till 16th September.

The month of Zulkaedah starts on 17th September.

Onam is celebrated in a grand scale in Kerala and generally it is known as
a harvest festival just like Thai Pongal in Tamil Nadu. Rather, it is one of
the very important festival for the people of Kerala. All community people
join in the Onam celebrations.

They call it as 10 day festival having so many functions and customs
for all the 10 days. While the first day is called Atham and the final day or
the tenth day is known as Thiru Onam. Varieties of food are prepared
and different types of programme like dance, sports etc are conducted
during this period.

Dear sir,

Nice to hear this cos I have noted that most Hindus do not mind wishing each other Merry Christmas but do not wish each other Eid Mubarak.
So I feel we should wish each other every festival if we want unity in diversity.

who said hindus not wishing our muslim friends? i wish my friends on muslim festivals. i used to visit nagoor dargha as well as velankanni .i heard the greatness of paramacharya of kamakodi through them also.muslim donote for hindu mass marriage and upanayanams in Pudukkottai
guruvayurappan

I also wish to particiapte in wishing happy onam to all. Mrs. Usha in our office stays nearby used to send adai pradhaman to us every onam. Snake boat race is a very big sport in kerala during this festival. I do not know the reason why a malayali is not able to get gold medal in boat race when boat race is a common feature there. Only from last year Tamil nadu started declaring holiday for onam. Mahablai is the blessed soul who is able to get the real footprint of Krishna on his head whereas, we are getting only chadari print on our head.

Dear sir,

I said that we hindus seldom wish fellow hindus Eid Mubarak even though hindus wish fellow hindus merry christmas.

My father in law is half malayalee and half chinese and he does not celebrate Onam at all.

In a way I am lucky that there is no tradition of celebrating Onam in my husbands paternal side other wise imagine all the extra work to do at home.

Today, one of my students brought for me a packet of sweets bought by her father at Bangalore and wished me

'Happy onam'! What a lovely way to unite the three states - Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka - on this special day! :grouphug:

hi
when i was young...we used to celebrate onam....we have school vacation for onam in palakkad....even tamil brhmins in palakkad

used to celebrate onam....atleast ONASADYA....means feast on onam day.....those days are golden days and very peaceful

life in palakkad agraharams.....now festivals are more commercialised.....its sad part of festival.....generally festivals are

for happiness and peacefulness....due to market culture....all festivals are gone beyond business...

Some how I feel Tamilians are too accepting for anything and join others for everything and anything.

As far as I know out here no Malayalee will celebrate Pongal or any Non Malayalee significant celebration.

Some of them even give 2 F's to Diwali.

I remember reading an article long long ago where all actresses were giving their comments about Diwali an actress from Kerala who acted in Tamil movies said that Diwali means nothing to her and only Onam matters.

Another actress from the north who is a muslim said that even though she is a muslim, Diwali was always fun and celebration time with friends and neighbours since she was young.

See the difference?
