I know one single gentleman belonging to a famous mudaliar clan in chennai who was a retired professor with madras university .
He had a huge bangalow in royapettah and had a street named after his family .
he used to accomodate poor students/reseachers family in his bungalow in return for food
he would also guide such students to get a doctorate
he also was taking care of a poor destitute girl seven years old ,take her help for going for walks and give her some presents.
he was a good GA for his research students
he could be eccentric also .
If he was upset , he would not guide his students and instead teach the destitute kid her lessons
lot of big guns used to call on him because of his influence and contacts
though stinkingly rich ,,he would wear tattered shirts which he would sew himself and wear coats in summer;{ he had been in england and would not give up his coat when he went out] and not use fan
he was bit of a miser when spending on himself was concerned
but he was a guardian angel for his students some of whom are in top positions in various universities in india
