I wish you had mentioned the names of Mannargudi Raju Sastrigal ( Kanchi
Maha Periyaval used to refer to him as Mannargudi Periyaval ) and Sri R.
Krishnaswamy of Tinnevelly, a leading advocate and a scholar. who was
later known as Swami Jnanananda Bharathi.
There were others also like Late M.Patanjali Sastri who was a judge in the
Supreme court of India.
Aavudai Akka of Shencottah was a great woman saint-poet and the
phiolosophical songs composed by her are still very popular.
Sir, I will come back with some more names.

The verse quoted by my friend is the last one , by way of phalasthuthi,
in the devotional hymn consisting of 100 verses. Abhirami Bhattar was
a Devi upasakar and King Sarfoji of Tanjore gave him this name. This
hymn was composed by him as a prayer to Goddess Abhirami of
Thirukkadavur situated on the southern bank of river Cauvery in Tanjore
district and is about 16 km from Mayavaram. Lord Iswara's name is
Amrithakadesar, who conferred the boon of chiranjivi to sage Markandeya
- " enrum pathinaaru ", meaning ever sixteen years of age.

Not surprising because Sri Dharbarenyeswaraswamy temple, Thirunallar is a Siva temple. But who bothers about him. It is only known as Saniswara Bagwan temple.

Swami Sivananda a Great Yogi who lived in Rishikesh. Originally from Pathamadai in Thirunelveli district. He and his disciple Swami Vishnu Devananda were the first to popularize Hatha Yoga in North America. he was the Giksha Guru of Swami Chinmayananda.

We should remember Tamil Brahmins who have played a major role in the industrialization of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. They got to the position because of their entrepreneurship not because of the accident of birth.

Sri. Ramayyan Dalawa, Dewan of Travancore from 1737 to 1756. A migrant from Thirunelveli district who started life as a servant in the palace and rose to the position of Commander-in-Chief of the Travancore army.
He was only following the example of Paranchothi Adigal (Chirutthonda Nayanar) the commander-in Chief of Narasimha Pallava and one of the great Nayanars.

Well said! i enjoyed your couplet on Rajni. It is he who portray, with conviction and confidence, everything in public about our culture. Even many tamilbrahmins are so shamed to identify themselves with some of the things like putting vibhuthi on one's forehead. Kudos to Rajni! perhaps, it is a paradox that other leaders like Ramadoss or Thiruma understand him and identify him with brahminical culture. While we don't do that.

Concerns were raised that not many in north India are aware of
Srinivasan Ramanujam, the great mathematician! And, the KKK would not recognise anything that is 'brahmin'. But the fact is the North Indians do not recognise anything to do with the South! how come one can expect that they would notice S.Ramanujam? Take the case of the struggle for independence from the colonisers, how many know the name of Kattabomman, or a V.O.C. or Subramanya Shiva, a Vanchinathan or even Bharathiyar is vaguely quoted; Even in Tamilnadu today these names are fast becoming non-existent. It is a overall degradation - all in the name of all sorts of nomenclature. We all live in a 'pseudo-world' and expect others to glorify and follow things which we ourselves shun, very often. There is no point in blaming; the process should begin at the individual level; i have been observing for the last 20 years, the tambrams from the west who visit the holy temples in tamilnadu - they speak in english with their wards and among themselves even inside the temple, thus having least love for the mother tongue and only when a love and respect for Tamil is there, then only other recognition would come. For long we have equated 'love for tamil' with the linguistic parochialism and thus neither we have genuine respect for the language nor for the contributors!
(About Vanchinathan: no one knew how he looked like; because, after he killed the collector Ash at Maniachi station, the government was so brutal in punishing anyone had any knowledge of Vanchi, so even his photos were burned or damaged beyond proportions, thus even the British government had no clue how he looked like! the one we have now is nothing but a drawing based on recollections. Collector Ash was so inhuman & ruthless that when a White visits Kuttralam, no Indians should be seen taking bath in Kuttralam or found in that falls area. It was Vachinathan who put a fullstop to that practice. As a tirunelvelian, it is being told to us by our elders, but how many in tamilnadu know these details or want to teach our students on this? we simply fear that our children should not be taught on violence and all that non-sensical beliefs! but, we graciously allow our children to watch all violence & illogical things on T.V. and other media. Don't we?

People who are competent to judge say that ramanujan was pure genius.He is the greatest .For his profundity,depth,insight.
He does not belong to an age,place or a community.Yet it seems to me that it cannot be an accident he was born an iyengar.
Does it have something to the fact that srivaishnavas have the highest veneration:bhaya-bhakthi,awe,wonder for the adbuta(splendour) for the Supreme Godhead and his infinite auspicious qualities.
Among iyers,S.chandrashekhar must rank very high in mathematical astrophysics for combining mathematical insight with a childlike curiousity to know the scientific truth.The Advaitic tradition has been more open minded in the quest for truth.
