Govt plans to ban astrology shows on Kannada TV channels, again

BENGALURU: A revised anti-superstition legislation that places restrictions on airing astrology shows on Kannada TV channels, among other things, may soon be enacted in Karnataka.

Chief minister Siddaramaiah announced that the government is mulling over a ban on TV astrology shows in a bid to tackle superstition. "Every TV channel wants to air astrology-based shows in Karnataka. There seem to be many viewers for them. In my home too, the scenario is no different. It's time we banned such shows," Siddaramaiah said at an event to felicitate a senior dalit leader here on Monday .

Though the Congress government had proposed a ban on such shows twice earlier since 2013, it was shot down due to pressure from different corners.

Siddaramaiah's announcement drew instant flak from some leading TV channels, which reportedly enjoy high Television Rating Points for astrology shows.

Some channels ran extended shows on Tuesday seeking reactions from opposition leaders to register their protest. "Many politicians strongly believe in astrology . They don't miss an opportunity to seek advice during elections and crises. How can they have different rules for different people?" asked an anchor of a leading channel.

Similarly All tamil channels give an overdose of bhakthi music besides preachers of all religions monopolise the channels.

It is sickening to see these early in the morning.

How about regulating these ?

We have a dravidian party ruling. This is against their ideology.

Very interesting. It is a well known fact the leaders of all the political outfits in Karnataka are believers in Astrology . Many of them run to Tamil Nadu to meet their family astrologers to find their future. The famous "Astrological Magazine" itself is published from Bangalore. Instead of spending their energy and time on unwanted issues, the present Congress Government should concentrate on peoples' welfare and development activities. Bangalore once known as a Garden City has earned the sobriquet of "Garbage City" today.

If kuththu songs and hip-shaking dances by poorly clad nubiles have a timeslot,

If gory scenes depicting in minute details how the neck of a man is to be slit with blood flowing freely has a timeslot,

If astrological blabbering tongues and their daily meaningless, pathetic predictions have a timeslot,

If half baked knowledge of carnatic music and its nuances can be elaborately displayed in a timeslot,

If mega serials showing how mom-in-laws and D-in laws pull each others' leg and how scheming young women bring down families has a timeslot,

Then bhakti and spiritual music and pravachanams also should have a place.

Those who feel sick in the morning may have a different reason for that sickness depending on what they took and how many pegs they took the previous night. It is called by a different name -hangover. LOL.

Programmes are decided by Channels on the basis of viewership and popularity.

If bhakti music and pravachanams are given a slot it is because they are popular among the viewing public. They rake in money for the TV companies from ads. There is something called rating which is ruthlessly neutral and hardnosed. LOL.

Our Tamil TV Channels are vying with each other in giving over dose of religious programmes spreading Bhakti ! Otherwise fill up time with Politics and Police cases. Cinema music have reached to saturation point in TV Shows. The serials in the prime time programs at night continue with endless episodes like "Kanni theevu of Dina Thanthi".
A precious media which could take the viewers to new realm of knowledge based programs is wasted on worthless things.
Unfortunate.
